Games2Win (G2W) has launched CT Racer, a racing Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) in collaboration with Japanese gaming company SEGA and Korean company Hyundai Digital. It’s free to play, and will be monetized by allowing gamers to pay for customizing cars, car parts, and adding embellishments like stickers, spoilers, wheelcaps etc. For this G2W has made game cards of Rs. 50 and Rs. 100 available at Cybercafes and youth hangouts. Users can choose to drive in Seoul or Shanghai, and create tournament rooms and groups (like Mumbai vs Delhi). As per the release, the game is live in over 100 cybercafes, with a target of 1000 cybercafes within 6 months; G2W has tied up with Sify for their 225 Game Dromes. [via release]

On the need for spending on advertising, all were thankful that Zapak came along and spent the money. But Kejriwal isn’t sure if offline advertising really helps. Everyone knew indiainfo.com, but nobody went there. Everyone knew Home Trade, but no one knew what it was. So it’s not about advertising a portal, but virality of content. Rohit Sharma of Zapak countered that he needs to invest and get returns, and everyone’s model is different. Someone in the audience asked about violence in games, and the panelists (apart from Rohit Sharma, of course) hoped that Zapak would spend some money on educating parents about the benefits of gaming.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) sucks a lot of advertising dollars, so dependancy on advertising is scary said Vishal Gondal. Mainly financial institutions, and portals like Shaadi and Naukri are advertising - not very relevant for a gaming site. N one knows how the market is beyond the early adopters. Mohit Anand of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) added that no one knows what will happen when this thing explodes.

How soon before we get some serious traction?
5-6 years appeared to be the consensus.

Games2Win CEO Alok Kejriwal has found that online gamers switch off a game sooner than expected when interrupted by in-game advertising. An agencyfaqs interview quotes Kejriwal as saying “...in-game advertising in India will still take maybe a few months to evolve because the consumer has to appreciate that the content is coming free to him because of the advertising.”

Another tit bit in the tete a tete that our readers could be interested in (or should be vary about) is the industry size estimate or should we rather say guesstimate? Kejriwal admits to not being too sure about the size—which I think is really strange considering he is in the industry—but goes on to throw a Rs. 100 crore number as possible cybercafe gaming revenues and another Rs.10 crore to Rs. 20 crore as possible pirated gaming CD sales. As per an IAMAI-IMRB report, the size of the Online gaming industry in India, as of Jan 2007, was around Rs. 21 crores. Revenue accruals from the organized cybercafe market were at Rs.12.17 core. Now, who do we believe?

One last statement of Kejriwal that really cracked me up was his response to Reliance’s entry into his industry. “I think it’s brilliant,” he says (do you believe that?) “When Reliance comes into an industry, it is blessed.” I don’t think any competitor of Reliance would consider it a blessing to be on the opposite team, unless of course the promoters hope to pocket a nice profit by selling their company to the big guys.

You’re reading it here first: STAR India has launched a video portal called Video On The Rocks (VOTR). It seems that STAR is banking on premium content - like small clips of Koffee With Karan, the Great Indian Laughter Challenge, music videos and film trailers and clips from TV shows - to drive usage. Sumant Kasliwal, VP Interactive for STAR India has confirmed the launch of the site, saying that VOTR is still in beta, still being developed and they’re around a month away from a formal launch.

Apparently, the idea is for the site to become a destination for short clips of premium content from not just STAR, but other media houses as well. Kasliwal doesn’t believe that the site will cannibalize on Indya on Demand, where they sell full TV shows, saying that VOTR will serve as a sampling site for that content. The site, expectedly, will be monetized with advertising. Users are also allowed to upload videos at VOTR, and hence there’s a risk of copyrighted content being uploaded. While Kasliwal says that they’ll follow the usual procedure of removing content once copyright owners point them out, I don’t think it will be too much of an issue if STAR is able to get the copyright owners on board anyway.

I also noticed that they’ve also launched “Indya Games”, a gaming portal powered by Games2Win. I’m sure Indiagames would have something to say about the name that’s been chosen for the site… Indya.com has also launched a travel meta-search engine powered by Zoomtra.
