Yes, it’s true: We are joining GigaOM. And the combined group will be a powerhouse, with more than 20 writers and editors, a strong presence on the East and West coasts and in Europe, and coverage of everything from media and big data, to the cloud and mobile, to book publishing and online video—not to mention the startup scene in various markets.

It’s a very exciting development for us, as ContentNext and GigaOM share so many of the same goals and have such similar cultures. We both believe fundamentally in the power of breaking news and smart, useful content across different platforms, and we both have a core conviction about practicing truth and fairness in our journalism. We also both happen to believe that you can build very profitable businesses if you can execute on those principles.

We have other things in common, too: Both companies’ founders—in our case, Rafat Ali, in GigaOM’s case, Om Malik—turned influential one-man blogs into vibrant media companies by being way ahead of the curve. (A side note: The two founders have also long been close friends.) The chance to work with Om is one that anyone would leap at. He is a true visionary with a unique understanding of technology and a gift for communicating that knowledge. He’s also stacked GigaOM with talented writers and editors who, like him, have a deep curiosity about the intersection of technology and business, particularly innovation. (You can read Om’s post on the sale.)

At a time when so many content companies are groping for sustainable business models, GigaOM has a dynamic approach to making money. Its multiple revenue streams extend from site advertising to conferences to subscription products and beyond; from its online audience of more than 4.5 million monthly unique visitors, to its leading events like GigaOM Structure and GigaOM Roadmap, to GigaOM Pro, which provides research on emerging technology markets from over 110 independent analysts. GigaOM has built a suite of products that can serve a variety audiences, all of which congregate under the GigaOM brand. And now that will expand to include our sites, newsletters and conferences.

For readers of ContentNext’s sites—paidContent, MocoNews, paidContent:UK and ContentSutra—there’s nothing not to like about this deal. You’ll still be able to attend our stellar conferences and enjoy our trenchant posts about the industries we cover. You’ll still be getting all the content you know from the writers that you’re used to getting it from. But now you’ll be getting something else, too: more smart voices on different and vital topics, and even more news and analysis.

Under the terms of the purchase, Guardian News & Media (GNM), which bought ContentNext Media in 2008, will take a minority stake in GigaOM. GNM joins existing GigaOM investors including Reed Elsevier (NYSE: RUK) Ventures, Alloy Ventures and True Ventures. The sale is the culmination of a process that began back in the fall, with multiple bidders for ContentNext. The New York investment bank Coady Deimar Partners advised GNM on the deal.

“With our shared commitment to journalistic ethics, GigaOM and paidContent are a natural fit,” said Paul Walborsky, CEO of GigaOM. “paidContent is the leading voice covering the evolution of media, an area that is very important to us. Integrating our teams will enrich our editorial coverage and expand our footprint immediately in two markets that are critical to our growth – New York City and the UK.” GigaOM, which was founded in 2006, is based in San Francisco. ContentNext, whose roots go back to 2002, is based in New York.

The sale ends ContentNext’s three-and-a-half-year run as part of Guardian News and Media. When GNM had bought ContentNext, part of the idea was that it could help the UK publisher gain mindshare in the U.S. as the Guardian expanded there. In recent months, GNM has been focusing its investment activity in the U.S. around the buildout of a new site. “paidContent has a fantastic presence in the tech/media space, and the match with GigaOM, itself a really smart and pioneering company, is a good one. We are delighted to become shareholders in GigaOM as part of the deal,” said Andrew Miller, CEO of Guardian Media Group, the parent company of GNM. “The Guardian’s focus in the U.S. is on building guardiannews.com, but we look forward to seeing paidContent thrive and grow in its new home and wish its staff all the very best for the future.”

We thank the Guardian for their stewardship, and can’t wait to start working with our new colleagues at GigaOM.

See GigaOM’sannouncement of the deal for additional details.

Hoping to tap into India’s rapidly growing e-commerce market, Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) is launching Junglee.com in the country today.

Junglee.com is not another “international Amazon” like Amazon.fr or Amazon.de. Rather, it is a marketplace that aims to connect buyers with online and offline retailers. The site offers 12 million products from 14,000 brands.

Amazon is also building a fulfillment center in Mumbai and has development centers in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

Users cannot buy goods directly from Junglee, although most product pages do link back to Amazon.com in addition to local sellers’ sites. The Kindle appears on Junglee.com but it is available only through Amazon.com, not from any local seller.

Some features of the site, however, are familiar. In November, Indian digital media site MediaNama reported, “Retailers have to provide XML based feeds of their products to Amazon, customized to Amazon’s categorization, and on completion of the sale, they will be responsible for delivery. Each retailer will be reviewed and rated by customers.

Junglee.com is not India’s only e-commerce site. The most well-known is Flipkart.com, founded by two former Amazon employees in 2007. It sells books—over 11.5 million titles—and other products and ships about 30,000 items per day.

Many Indian customers already use Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk offers free super saver shipping to India. “From the metrics we see, Amazon currently gets more traffic from India than Flipkart does,” Indian venture capitalist Mahesh Murthy recently told Reuters.

Research in Motion (NSDQ: RIMM) has finally decided to get serious about its predicament: co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are stepping aside after a disastrous year in which the company squandered its once-dominant position in the smartphone market.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the two CEOs would step down Monday morning and be replaced by Thorston Heins, who has been RIM’s chief operating officer. They will both stay on RIM’s board, but will no longer have executive roles at the company founded by Lazaridis and overseen by the duo for nearly two decades.

The company confirmed the move in a press release following the published report, and Balsillie and Lazardis granted interviews to the WSJ in conjunction with release of the report, interestingly timed for the middle of the San Francisco 49ers-New York Giants championship game in San Francisco. In the report, they said they were not pushed from their roles but it’s hard to take that at face value, given that RIM was under serious pressure from investors to release a plan for management changes by the end of January following a deal cut just before its annual meeting last July.

Lazaridis will become vice chair of RIM’s board and will chair something called the Innovation Committee. RIM said he will provide “strategic counsel” to Heins and will apparently be much more active than Balsillie, who will remain on the board but with no new public role. Barbara Stymiest, a current RIM board member, will become Board Chair.

The former CEOs, as well as Heins, also spoke to their hometown paper, the Globe and Mail, in advance of actually announcing the move. Heims has been chief operating officer of product engineering for RIM following a reorganization last year in which RIM laid off employees and attempted to streamline its operation. But that wasn’t enough to prevent the company from making several more product and strategic mistakes during the latter half of 2012.

RIM is in deep trouble for taking far too long to react to the launch of the iPhone, a seminal moment in the modern mobile computing industry that was initially dismissed by RIM’s management has having been faked by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). Changing consumer tastes for smartphones led to a precipitous drop in RIM’s U.S. market share in 2010 and throughout 2011, and the company has fumbled several attempts to catch up. New BlackBerry 7 handsets were delayed in 2011 after RIM miscalculated the processing power that would be required, and a similar mistake led to the delay of its first QNX-based smartphones, which were supposed to appear in early 2012 but now aren’t expected until the end of the year.

Heins promised the Globe and Mail that “what you will see with me is rigour and flawless execution.” That’s something RIM could surely use following all the product delays, but the company also needs to articulate a clearer vision for how it intends to transition between the staid BlackBerry OS and the newer QNX operating system, which RIM has renamed BlackBerry 10 yet struggled to get anyone to notice the software following the failed launch of its Playbook tablet.

———————————————————
NEW YORK, Jan. 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)—The Wall Street Journal has named Raju Narisetti as Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal Digital Network, which includes WSJ.com, SmartMoney.com, MarketWatch and the Chinese, Japanese and German-language editions of WSJ.com. Mr. Narisetti will also become a Deputy Managing Editor of the Journal, and he will report to Alan Murray, Deputy Managing Editor and Executive Editor, Online.

Mr. Narisetti currently serves as Managing Editor for The Washington Post (NYSE: WPO), where he oversees the company’s digital content products, staff and strategy. Today’s appointment marks a return to the Journal for Mr. Narisetti, who first joined the paper in 1994 as a reporter in Pittsburgh and most recently served as Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe in 2006.

“Raju has done remarkable work as the digital czar at the Washington Post, integrating print and online businesses, building a successful web site, and developing key relationships with the digerati,” said Robert Thomson, Editor-in-Chief of Dow Jones and Managing Editor of the Journal. “His experience in creating Mint, a national web site and newspaper in India, also brings important relationships and unique expertise that will assist us as we expand our global digital network. Raju is wired, and we are jazzed.”

“Raju knows the world, knows digital journalism, and knows the Journal,” said Mr. Murray. “He is the perfect person to lead us into a new era of global growth.”

Mr. Narisetti’s appointment follows the recent departure of WSJ.com Managing Editor Kevin Delaney.

Strong Digital Growth from New Content, Product Offerings and Global Expansion

The Wall Street Journal Digital Network has seen tremendous growth in recent years with the introduction of expanded news coverage, content and new products as well as increased usage across its Web sites, mobile applications and tablet editions. The network has more than 1.3 million paid digital subscribers across multiple platforms and devices, and averages more than 50 million visitors per month online.

WSJ.com’s success has been buoyed by an expansion in politics, national and world news, sports and lifestyle coverage, as well as live and on-demand video, real-time blogs and the launch of premium verticals. WSJ.com generated a 42% year-over-year increase in traffic in 2011, averaging more than 36 million visitors per month worldwide. The new WSJ Live interactive video application is already available to millions of users via the iPad and multiple Internet-connected televisions and set-top boxes.

Globally, more than 30% of the total digital audience comes from outside the North American market, including Asia, which generates more than 11 million visitors per month, and nearly six million from Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2011, traffic to the Journal’s Chinese- and Japanese-language Web sites increased 38% and 150%, respectively.

To further serve its expanding global audience, the Journal and Dow Jones have launched a series of regionally focused digital initiatives – the most recent of which, a German-language news site (WSJ.de), launched earlier this month. Other regional offerings are available, including China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe.

Investors won’t have Jerry Yang to blame anymore. In a stunning move announced after the markets closed, the Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) co-founder resigned from the company’s board of directors and from all other positions—effective immediately. Just as quickly, Yahoo’s stock jumped in after-hours trading.

From Yang’s letter to the board:

“My time at Yahoo!, from its founding to the present, has encompassed some of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. However, the time has come for me to pursue other interests outside of Yahoo! As I leave the company I co-founded nearly 17 years ago, I am enthusiastic about the appointment of Scott Thompson as Chief Executive Officer and his ability, along with the entire Yahoo! leadership team, to guide Yahoo! into an exciting and successful future.”

It is a surprising move but only in its timing and its thoroughness. Activist shareholders—most notably Third Point’s Daniel Loeb—have called for his resignation, concerned in part that Yang was on the board while he was exploring ways to take the company private.

Yang also has stepped back before, resigning as CEO—but always keeing a connection. This time, Yang—aka the “Chief Yahoo”—is severing all ties with the company he and David Filo founded in 1995 for the navigational guide they developed as students at Stanford in 1994. He has been on the board since 1995, was CEO from 2007-2009, and at this writing, still anchors the management page.

That page is headed now by Scott Thompson, the PayPal president who joined Yahoo as CEO just two weeks ago, replacing Carol Bartz, who was fired on Labor Day. Yang’s departure letter includes a shout out for Thompson, who in press-release speak thanked Yang for “the warm welcome and support Jerry provided me during my early days here.” Thompson’s first earnings call in next Tuesday.

But Yang can’t get completely away: he’s still one of the company’s largest individual shareholders. And resigning won’t really help him escape the blame for Yahoo’s failure to thrive as an investment or to set a strong course, no matter how many highlights the company’s been able to string together. It also doesn’t blot out the memory of failing to sell to Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) when the price was right.

What it does do is remove him as an impediment, imagined or real, to Yahoo’s future and leaves Roy Bostock, chairman of the board, as the lead voodoo doll for outside investors and critics to stick pins in until he, too, goes away. (Kara Swisher’s sources say Bostock and three others will be leaving soon: board vets Arthur Kern, Vyomesh Joshi, and Gary Wilson.)

Unless, of course, resigning from the boards of Yahoo, Yahoo Japan and and Alibaba Group is a palette cleanser for an effort to work outside the company to take it private.

I hope not. I hope Yang is sincere when he says it’s time to pursue interests outside of Yahoo! (I’ll give him the exclamation point this once).

It’s bittersweet to watch someone who has given his all, sometimes with stunning results and sometimes with outcomes far less than desired, decide what’s best for him—and the company—is to move on.

The sweet bit comes from knowing Jerry Yang has a lot more left to accomplish.

Just last month, Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) rolled out its Kindle Fire, the first Kindle designed as a full media device—not an e-reader with some frills. That announcement was followed by Kobo’s announcement of the Vox. And, as expected, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS)—which already had a touchscreen color e-reader that some hackers were converting into an inexpensive Android tablet—announced its Nook Tablet.

Each wants to offer its current e-reader users an option that keeps them from shifting to the iPad when they go tablet and to appeal to new users who will spend money on books, magazines, apps and more after the hardware investment. In Amazon’s case, it literally is unlocking the video experience it has been building for computers and connected TVs but that has been unreachable from anywhere else. These aren’t just e-readers on steroids—they are playing in a new category now.

So why are we including them in our e-reader chart? We want to show how the e-reader category has grown and where these tablets fit in as extensions of brands known until now for e-readers and e-reading platforms. We also recognize that many consumers are making choices between dedicated e-readers, e-readers on steroids, and tablets; showing them in one chart makes it easier to see the differences, particularly with regards to what consumers need to know about each device. But this is the last time we’ll fold the tablets in with e-readers. We’re adding a chart here that compares these three tablets with the iPad, the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) tablet that owns that category now. We’re also working on a new chart that compares those tablets with other notable players in the media tablet category.

We have come a long way in a very short time. For perspective, consider that the Kindle launched four years ago at $399—one-and a-half times more expensive than the Kindle Fire and five times the cost of the cheapest Kindle now being sold. The Nook is two years younger as a brand. E-reading is no longer a niche for early adopters. It is mainstream with hardware options to match.

“Where did the computer go?” was the slogan Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) used in 2004 when it launched the first of its current range of iMac desktop computers. The question was designed to draw attention to the ingenuity with which the company’s designers had managed to pack the components of an entire desktop computer into what was effectively an enclosure for a large flat screen. But actually it’s a question with a more contemporary relevance, because nowadays most of us rely on “computing” that’s provided by machines we never see and could not locate even if we tried. They are somewhere out there in the internet “cloud,” which is how so many of us came to be users of something called “cloud computing”.

It’s very different from how things used to be. Once upon a time the computer was the PC (or the laptop) on your desk. If you wanted to do word processing, or calculations on a spreadsheet, or to read and write emails, you did so by launching a program that ran on your computer. And the data – the documents, calculations or messages – that you produced were likewise stored on the hard drive inside your machine. Even if the PC was connected to the net, most of your computing activity happened inside the box on your desk. And now? First, most of what we think of as “computing” is increasingly done using a smartphone or an iPad or a simple, stripped-down, laptop or “netbook”. Much of our data – documents, emails, photographs, spreadsheets – is no longer stored on our devices but is held in distant server farms operated by the likes of Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) and Microsoft. And if you’re a serious user of computing resources you will not only store your stuff in the cloud, but rent virtual computers from companies such as Amazon on which to run your own programs.

What made this possible was the penetration of broadband – ie internet connections that were fast enough to ensure that interactions with distant machines happened at a tolerable speed. Once these types of connections became widespread, the die was cast.

For individuals, reliance on cloud computing came about mainly because companies such as Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), Google and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) offered useful services – think search (Google, Bing), webmail (Hotmail, Gmail), image hosting (Flickr, Picasa) and social networking (Facebook) – that were apparently free (ie supported by advertising) and required no special software (other than a browser) running on their computers.

For companies, the route into dependence on cloud computing was driven by economics. Building and running IT services for thousands of employees is an expensive and unrewarding business. But for several decades companies had little alternative – just as a century ago they had no alternative except to build and operate their own electricity generators. But eventually it became possible to purchase electricity off the grid, and so most companies shut down their generators and left the messy business of producing electricity to utility companies. Now they’re doing the same with computing services, which they regard as a utility – just like electricity or water. In other words, the net has become another kind of grid. JN

Apple / iCloud

Key features iCloud launched in early October, promising a simple and elegant way to store music, photos, documents and other files on Apple’s servers and then access them from iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and computers. The key point is that a lot of this is done automatically in the background without you having to do anything. For example, a feature called Photo Stream makes all the photos you take appear on your other devices for up to 30 days.

iCloud also lets you download all your previous purchases on Apple’s iTunes Store to your Apple-registered devices. Meanwhile, developers making apps for Apple devices can also use iCloud’s storage. Early examples include game saves being accessible across iPhone and iPad, and document editing apps working across all these devices.

Devices iCloud works on any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running the iOS 5 software, as well as any Mac running the OS X Lion operating system. But it also works on PCs, through iTunes.

The cost iCloud is free with 5GB of storage space for your content, although anything you buy from iTunes doesn’t count towards this total, nor do your Photo Stream pictures. 10GB of additional storage costs £14 a year, while 20GB costs £28 and 50GB costs £70.

Ease of use The key to iCloud is that, often, you don’t have to “use” it: the service does things in the background without you needing to upload or download anything. The idea being that quickly, you’ll just assume your files and content are available on whatever device you’re using at the time.

Privacy and security iCloud involves a lot of your personal content being sent over the internet and/or stored on Apple’s servers, although the company uses encryption technology to keep it secure. Apple also has a policy of only storing location data from individual devices for 24 hours on its servers before deleting it.

Great for… Anyone with an Apple device, but particularly for those with two or three. SD

Microsoft / SkyDrive

Key features Microsoft’s SkyDrive is part of its Windows Live service, with strong links to services such as Hotmail, Windows Messenger and Xbox Live. It’s more of a virtual hard drive in the cloud, using a similar system of folders to organise your stored files.

You can store documents, photos and videos in your SkyDrive, as well as other files. Documents can be edited within Microsoft’s Office web apps – just like Google (NSDQ: GOOG). Meanwhile, Hotmail is the basis for synchronising your contacts, email and calendars across all these devices.

SkyDrive also has the ability to make certain folders public – to share their contents with friends and family, for example. This feature is useful for workmates collaborating on big documents or projects. Like Apple, Microsoft wants developers to incorporate SkyDrive into their apps, both on PCs and Windows Phones.

Devices SkyDrive is accessible from PCs and Macs, but also from smartphones running the Windows Phone operating system. It has a good mobile website, too, which works on other mobile devices.

The cost SkyDrive is free, and you get 25GB of storage for your documents and files. At the time of writing, there is no way to buy additional storage.

Ease of use One easy way to use SkyDrive is from within Microsoft applications, such as the latest version of Office, which lets you save documents directly to your SkyDrive. It’s also integrated into Windows Phones, allowing you to save photos to your SkyDrive immediately after taking them. Using the main website to upload and access files is simple, too.

Privacy and security Microsoft gives every file you store on SkyDrive its own web address, making it easy to share them with friends – and the URLs are long and complex enough not to be guessed. You can also set files and folders to share with specific contacts or to be entirely private.

Great for… Anyone with a Windows Phone and the hardy people who are still using Hotmail in 2011. SD

Google

Key features Google has a number of cloud services that increasingly interlink. Gmail, for example, now offers an impressive 7.6GB of free storage for emails and attachments, while also storing your contacts.

Another Google cloud service is Google Calendar, which stores your engagements in the cloud so you’re never far from a device telling you when your dentist appointment is.

Google Docs is for creating, editing and sharing documents, spreadsheets and presentations – an online equivalent of Microsoft’s Office (although in response to Google Docs, Microsoft now has one of those too).

Google eBookstore is a cloud service for buying ebooks and accessing them from any web-enabled device, while the company has a music service live in the US, and coming our way soon.

Devices Google makes its cloud services available across every device possible: computers, tablets and smartphones. On the latter two, this is a mixture of apps and (often superior) mobile websites. They work particularly well on devices running Google’s Android software.

The cost All Google’s cloud services are free. That said, if you find yourself bumping up against the upper storage limit on Gmail, 20GB costs $5 a year, 80GB costs $20, 200GB costs $50, 400GB costs $100 a year and 1TB will set you back $256.

Ease of use Google’s experience shines through: its services are easy to use, with Google Docs presenting no problems for anyone switching from desktop tools such as Office. Over time, the different services have also linked together in some good ways, such as prompting you to make a calendar appointment from within Gmail.

Privacy policy Google’s policy of selling ads relating to keywords in your emails can spook new Gmail users, but the company says its systems are entirely automated – and are also used to screen out viruses and spam from your inbox. Security-wise, Gmail can offer a two-step verification process to enter an additional code when logging in.

Great for… Cost-sensitive web users who buy into the Googleplex dream. SD

Dropbox

Key features Dropbox is the independent option in the four main cloud services we have chosen: it’s a startup that doesn’t make its own devices or operating systems. Its pitch

is simple sharing, with files saved to Dropbox made instantly available across all your other devices.Other key selling points are the fact that Dropbox works when you’re offline because the files are actually stored on your devices, but it also keeps data usage to a minimum – important for mobile users – by only transferring the parts of files that change when you edit them.

Dropbox also includes sharing features to give friends, family and colleagues access to specific folders, so that it’ll feel like that folder is stored on their computer too. You also have a Public folder where every file has a link for anyone to view.

Devices Dropbox works on just about anything: its website is fine for PCs and Macs, while it has apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry. Phone users can edit files and then upload their photos and videos.

The cost Dropbox is free at its basic level, which provides 2GB of storage for your files. You pay $9.99 a month for the Pro 50 package (50GB) and $19.99 a month for Pro 100 (100GB).

Ease of use Dropbox has been designed to be easy to start using straight away, even if you’re not a geek. The focus is on simplicity, from uploading files to sharing them with others. From the moment that your different devices are set up to synchronise your files, it’s seamless.

Privacy policy Dropbox caused a stir earlier in 2011 with a change to its terms and conditions taken by many people as a claim to ownership over the files stored on it. The following week, however, it clarified to users that “You retain ownership of your stuff… We don’t own your stuff.”

Great for… Independently minded souls with a range of devices from different manufacturers. SD

Cloud atlas: Specialist providers

Photos: Digital cameras and smartphones mean a lot of people have thousands of photos stored on their computers. Why store them in the cloud too? Partly to make them easier to share, but also for security: a back-up in case your hard drive comes a cropper.Flickr is the best-known cloud photos service, although in recent years it has faced serious competition from Facebook. You can upload to Flickr from your computer or mobile device, and it now makes it easier to post them on social networks too. Rivals include Photobucket and Picasa Web Albums, although now there are also mobile cloud photo apps such as Instagram and Picplz, which let you apply a range of visual effects before sharing.Music: Apple’s iCloud will soon be the most high-profile cloud music service in the UK, but there are already rivals available.Sony’s Music Unlimited is one of the best, because it combines the ability to store your existing music collection in the cloud with a Spotify-style library of songs you don’t own, to stream. It works on computers, but also Android devices and the PlayStation 3 console.

Carphone Warehouse also has a cloud music service, My Music Anywhere, which stores your collection online, including playlists, and allows you to access it from other computers and your smartphone.

There is also US service MP3tunes, which is controversial within the music industry (record label EMI sued it), but it was one of the first to offer a music locker, with 2GB of free storage and more for customers who pay.

Games: When it comes to games, the term “cloud” means something different. It’s not about uploading your games to a remote server, but about never having to own the games in the first place: no downloads or discs required. Your chosen game runs on OnLive’s server, delivering video to whatever screen you’re playing on – PC, Mac, TV or tablet – then transmitting your controls back up to the server. One key advantage is that you don’t need the most powerful hardware to run even the latest, most graphic-intensive games.

To play on a TV, you’ll need the OnLive Game System (a set-top box and joypad) which costs £69.99 plus subscription at £6.99 a month, although you buy access to brand new games separately.

One rival is Gaikai, which aims to strike deals with websites to make games and demos playable within the web browser.

Cloud hardware: The lowdown

Most of the talk around the cloud concerns software and websites, but increasingly there is hardware too. Google’s Chromebooks are laptops designed to be used with the company’s cloud services. They even boot up straight into the web browser. Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet works with that company’s cloud services. It goes on sale in the US this month, but no UK release date has been set.

Walter Isaacson, Jobs’s official biographer, says Jobs was livid in January 2010 when Taiwan’s HTC introduced an Android phone with many of the popular features of the iPhone. He launched into an expletive-laden tirade in which he said Google’s actions amounted to “grand theft”.

By that time Eric Schmidt, then Google’s chief executive and still its chairman, had left the board of Apple where he had served between 2006 and 2009 – crucially, covering the period during which the first iPhone was launched and which enabled Google (NSDQ: GOOG) to negotiate a deal to provide search, maps and its YouTube video service on the phones.

“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40bn in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs told Isaacson. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

In a subsequent meeting with Schmidt at a cafe in Palo Alto, California, Jobs told Schmidt he wasn’t interested in settling the lawsuit, the book says. “I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5bn, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.” The meeting, Isaacson wrote, resolved nothing.

The meeting may be that which occurred at the end of March 2010, when the duo were spotted having coffees outside a cafe in Palo Alto and which was discussed widely on the web. Jobs and Schmidt appeared to be on friendly terms – though the content of the discussion was unclear. At the time Jobs was heard to say, “They’re going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it” but then added “Let’s go discuss this somewhere more private”.

By that time Apple had begun a lawsuit against HTC, alleging that it infringed 20 patents belonging to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). In the press release, Jobs was quoted as saying: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

The lawsuit has still not been resolved: HTC has counter-sued Apple, and the tit-for-tat battle has continued.

Apple’s patent claims against HTC would be applicable against all Android smartphone handsets if they succeed, suggests Florian Müller, an independent consultant on patents. In July, the US International Trade Commission ruled that HTC had infringed one of Apple’s patents and that this could mean that a US import ban might be applicable. HTC has appealed against the decision.

The decision rests on a key patent filed by Apple in 1996, which is valid until 2016. Known as “647”, it turns phone numbers or addresses into clickable links.

After Google launched its Android operating system at the end of 2008, and the first phones appeared in 2009, the rivalry between the two companies became more and more intense – especially after Google began to tailor Android to use more of the ideas introduced by the iPhone, such as touch-screen control to control a range of icons and the “pinch-to shrink” system for resizing images.

Isaacson’s biography of Jobs is being officially published on Monday.

Smartphone maker Research In Motion (RIM) is facing a user revolt after tens of millions of users in Europe, the Middle East and Africa suffered a second day without services such as BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), as the company struggled with problems at its hub in Slough, Berkshire.

The company also revealed that the areas affected now include South America, with users in Brazil, Chile and Argentina suffering loss of service.

With more than 70 million subscribers to its services around the world, RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) may have suffered lasting damage to its reputation. Reaction on social networks suggested that some users are considering moving to other platforms, such as Android phones or Apple’s iPhone, which are not reliant on RIM’s centralised service for connectivity.

The Guardian understands the problems have been caused by database corruption in Slough. Though the teams believed it had been fixed on Monday, the problem reappeared on Tuesday, effectively disabling the network operations centre. The Guardian also understands that RIM’s staff now hope to have the problem fixed by 8am BST on Wednesday.

The outage follows one that began on Monday morning at about 11am BST and lasted until late in the afternoon. RIM had indicated that the problem was fixed, but on Tuesday morning BlackBerry users discovered they had once again lost service, with limited access to emails, web browsing and secure services such as BBM.

The problems have caused some people to reconsider their use of RIM’s platform, which relies on its own servers to encrypt communications and connect BlackBerry devices to the internet. Any time that RIM’s servers suffer an outage like that which has hit it over the past two days, users of the systems can find reception of emails, texts and web browsing severely limited.

Any loss of customers in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region would be a serious problem for RIM, which has been losing market share in North America, traditionally one of its strongest markets, to phones running Google’s Android mobile operating system and to Apple’s iPhone.

In the US, RIM has lost 4.3 million users in the past year, according to calculations by Horace Dediu, of the independent consultancy Asymco. “[It] is now at about the same number of users it had in late 2009. This is in a market that has more than doubled,” he noted.

“With only about 16.5 million US users and an average loss of half a million users per month, unless something drastic happens, RIM could lose its entire US user base by the end of next year.”

RIM has been aiming to balance that by expansion in EMEA and regions such as India. But it is being badly squeezed on price there by more affordable Android phones. Its most recent quarterly results showed revenues down by 10 percent year on year, and profits crashing by 60 percent.

In the EMEA region, RIM has been showing growth in the number of handset sales over the past quarter, according to data from ComTech WorldPanel seen by the Guardian. This has largely balanced out losses of users in the US.

But the company has been under growing financial pressure this year as its investment in its PlayBook tablet has failed to ignite sales: it shipped just 500,000 in its first quarter on sale in spring, and only 200,000 in the succeeding quarter. In the US it is now offering $200 discounts, but those have not been extended to the UK. Sources with sight of UK retailing figures said that: “RIM partners have been told to keep shtum about the bad situation [of PlayBook sales].”

The Guardian’s calculations suggest that RIM has up to 800,000 PlayBooks in its in-house inventory. The total inventory held by the company has swollen to the equivalent of almost 35 percent of revenues, suggesting a serious backlog of unsold equipment.

RIM’s manager for the EMEA area was not available to comment. In a statement issued at 4pm BST on Tuesday, the company said: “Some users in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina are experiencing messaging and browsing delays. We are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.”

Ontario-based RIM is the only smartphone platform which uses the system, devised in its early days so that it could offer secure connectivity for early users, and reduce the amount of bandwidth used by individual devices. Communications for North America are directed through its hub at its Ontario headquarters, while those for Europe, the Middle East and Africa run through its headquarters in Slough.

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) co-founder Steve Jobs has died, the company said late Wednesday. He was 56.

Jobs stepped down from his longtime role as Apple CEO in August, after years of suffering from complications related to pancreatic cancer. His death comes one day after Apple unveiled the latest version of one of his many game-changing technology products, the iPhone.

Apple’s board of directors announced his death in a statement:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

The company took the iPhone 4S off its home page following the announcement of Jobs’ death and replaced it with his official Apple portrait.

Upon clicking on Jobs’s image, Apple displayed this statement and invited visitors to submit their memories to rememberingsteve@apple.com:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Under Jobs, Apple changed the technology industry more than once over his two separate terms in office, most recently from 1997, when he re-assumed command of the company he founded with Steve Wozniak. That stretch in Apple’s history produced the iMac, iPod, iTunes, Macbook Air, iPhone, iPad, and billions of dollars in profits.

Jobs’ health problems began in 2004, when he underwent surgery to treat pancreatic cancer. He appeared to regain his health but started to appear thinner and thinner throughout 2008 and into 2009, in what was believed to be an inability to properly digest food. He took a six-month medical leave from Apple in 2009, and underwent a liver transplant during that time. After returning to Apple in the summer of 2009, the company introduced the iPad in 2010 in order to jump-start a whole new category of mobile computing that was largely defined by Apple’s (and Jobs’) taste and skills.

He took an indefinite medical leave earlier this year, and stepped down as CEO in August, giving way to longtime understudy Tim Cook.

Cook sent an e-mail to Apple employees following the announcement, which Apple distributed. “No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much,” he wrote.

Jobs is survived by his wife Laurene and their three children: Reed, Erin, and Eve. Jobs was also the father of Lisa Brennan-Jobs.

Jobs’ family issued this statement:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family. In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

A spectrum of individual reactions from around the tech, business, media, and even political worlds poured out Wednesday evening.

More on Steve Jobs in <a href=http://paidcontent.org/tag/steve-jobs/">our archives.

President Obama issued this statement:

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike.

With the 2006 sale of Pixar to Disney (NYSE: DIS) for $7.4 billion in stock, Jobs, who has been compared to Walt Disney in terms of creative vision and impact, became the largest individual shareholder and a member of the board. But his influence at Disney began before that.

In 2005, he convinced Disney CEO Bob Iger to make ABC the first broadcast network offering programs through iTunes. The rapport the two of them achieved helped make the Pixar deal possible and laid the groundwork for a successful integration. Iger issued this statement:

Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an ‘original,’ with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) co-founder Sergey Brin posted this on his Google+ feed:

From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry and I sought inspiration for vision and leadership, we needed to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). And I have witnessed it in person the few times we have met. On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues at Apple.

Larry Page, Google’s current CEO and co-founder, had this to say:

He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well.

Google, a fierce rival of Apple’s over the past several years, added a link to Apple’s Web page and Jobs tribute beneath its search bar with the simple inscription “Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011.”

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Jobs’ foil for decades, invoked a famous Jobs catchphrase on his Twitter feed: “For those of us lucky enough to get to work with Steve, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.” Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and the likely heir to Jobs’ status as the most iconic leader in Silicon Valley, posted this on his personal Facebook feed: “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

Move over, Kindle Fire - the world has a new cheapest tablet computer. India’s government has announced a new Android-powered tablet called Aakash priced at between $35 and $60 that could set a light under the booming country’s digital content market.

Canadian hardware firm Datawind is making the seven-inch device in Hyderabad after pitching a low tender. The Indian government is placing an initial order for 100,000 on students’ behalf at 2,200 rupees per unit ($44.50) but Datawind says a forthcoming higher-volume order will push the effective price down to $35. Those devices will be WiFi only.

In 60 days’ time, the device will go on general consumer retail at 2,999 rupees ($60.70), together with a built-in SIM slot, rebranded “Ubislate”.

Human resources minister Kapil Sibal: “There are some moments in history that will be milestones recognised by future generations. This is one such milestone. Today, we see the beginning of a dream realised, a dream in which every student in every corner of this country will have access to technology that defines the 21st Century.”

Economic Times: “The number of Internet users grew 15-fold between 2000 and 2010, according to another recent report. Still, just 8 percent of Indians have access. That compares with nearly 40 percent in China. Some 19 million people subscribe to mobile phones every month, making India the world’s fastest growing market, but most are from the wealthier segment of the population in towns.”

It’s not clear how the device comes in so cheap, but its specs put it on par with lower-end Android smartphones - a 366MHz processor, resistive screen, 256Mb of memory, a 32Gb expandable memory slot and two USB ports, running Android 2.2 (Froyo).

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) ended the rampant speculation over the plans for its next iPhone with the announcement of a new model called the iPhone 4S during an event at its headquarters in Cupertino Tuesday. The iPhone 4S will be much the same as the current iPhone 4, but will use the faster A5 processor that ships with the iPad 2.

The iPhone 4S is basically the same design as the iPhone 4 but with a redesigned wireless antenna that will supposedly offer a better voice-calling experience (novel idea for a phone) and it will be a so-called “world phone,” meaning it will run on both the GSM and CDMA family of wireless network standards. It will start shipping on October 14th in several countries including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Japan, and be available on AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon, and Sprint (NYSE: S) in the U.S., as expected. A broader international rollout will follow on October 28th.

Apple upgraded the camera on the iPhone 4S, improving the speed at which it can take and process images as well as adding HD video recording. But the meat of the presentation was saved for Siri, a voice-recognition service that will let iPhone 4S users set up calendar appointments and tasks on their phone. Perhaps more significantly, it will also allow iPhone 4S users to search the Internet with voice commands, tapping into information services like Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha.

If Siri works as advertised, that could be a problem for Google (NSDQ: GOOG), which depends heavily on iPhone owners for mobile Web searches. Apple said this would be a “beta” service to start (that means expect bugs) and it will support English, French, and German at launch. For its part, Google has offered voice commands on Android phones for over a year, but it’s unclear how many people actually use those services.

Apple said the iPhone 4S will cost $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for a 32GB version, and $399 for a 64GB version, the first time Apple has offered an iPhone at that capacity. It will continue to sell the iPhone 4 for $99 in black and white versions, and will sell the iPhone 3GS for free (presumably with a two-year contract).

The new device was announced during Apple’s first event since former CEO and current Chairman Steve Jobs stepped down from his leadership role in August. Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, and Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president in charge of iOS software, handled most of the introductions. Apple is hoping to keep the momentum in its mobile business going under the new leadership team, which has sold 250 million iOS devices to date, Cook announced.

Details were trickling out of an auditorium on Apple’s campus, where a dozen or so live blogs groaned under the weight of those seeking information about Apple’s new iPhone plans. Some believe the company also plans to introduce an iPhone 5 model with more features later in the presentation.

Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller introduced the iPhone 4S, just minutes after announcing that Apple planned to cut the price of the iOS-bearing iPod Touch by $30 to $199 for the cheapest 8GB version.

Forstall spent a great deal of time recapping the features Apple announced in June for iOS 5, which will be available on October 12th. But Apple also announced Cards, a new iOS 5 application that lets users design a postcard on their iPhone and iPad and have Apple print out that card and mail it for a fee, $2.99 in the U.S.

iCloud will come with an app called “Find My Friends,” a location-aware service that seems akin to Foursquare or Google’s Latitude that lets friends share their location with one another through iCloud, Cue announced. He promised that the app would have “simple privacy controls,” according to a number of live reports from Apple’s event.

Cue otherwise spent the majority of his talk rehashing parts of the iCloud service that Apple already announced in June, such as iTunes Match and iTunes In The Cloud.

There’s no question that apps have become a global phenomenon in the mobile world—and who doesn’t want to catapult a cute red bird onto some logs to kill a pig? But not all apps are as wildly successful as Angry Birds. So just as importantly, when it comes to what kind of apps sell best, publishers would do well to remember to think locally—especially in certain markets like Asia, according to research from Distimo.

The biggest app stores are now tipping the half-million mark in terms of overall inventory, but a recent report from the app analytics firm found that when it comes to the most popular apps, consumers often gravitate to content published especially for their markets. In the biggest store of all—the App Store from Apple—on average, nearly one-third of the most popular apps in each country store—27 percent—were unique to those stores.

Distimo notes that the U.S.—at 7,158 apps—has the most exclusively published apps in its App Store. No surprise, really, given this is where so many developers are based and where so many hope to find success first before trying elsewhere.

Looking at worldwide trends, language also plays a big role.

Taking the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia, these countries’ top apps overlap 54 percent of the time. Although Latin America does not seem to get ranked by Distimo, you can imagine that it too would see a similar trend. The storewide average overlap is 33 percent.

On the other hand, countries with the highest number of localized apps in the top rankings marry two important trends: they have very mobile-friendly consumers, and they are countries where English is not the first language.

Japan topped the list with 67 percent of its most popular apps being popular in that country alone. China, where Apple launched a country-specific App Store in October 2010, came in second with 56 percent of most popular apps specific to the China App Store.

Is there a limit to how many local apps have a chance against the world-wide bestsellers like Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja? For now, it appears the answer is yes. Distimo notes that one-third local seems to be the general number for local apps’ popularity across all platforms, not just Apple’s.

Nokia’s Ovi Store, for example, has significantly more country-specific apps than other app stores—29.4 percent for Ovi with Apple the next-highest proportion at only 5.2 percent—but Distimo notes that the number of local apps that make it into the top rankings are roughly the same as for the App Store and the Android Market, despite Apple’s and Google’s catalogs having far fewer local apps.

That could spell an opportunity for those developers looking to have more visibility among users in specific markets.

You can see that trend playing out especially in China. Platforms like Android are seeing the creation of full-out local app stores to compete with the Android Market, catering to those using devices built on the OS, with app stores from the likes of Baidu (NSDQ: BIDU) and Tencent.

There have also been a number of companies setting up shop to help localize apps from, say, the U.S. market for the Chinese market. The most recent of these was an effort from the DIY app platform Mobile Roadie, which as partnered with local mobile agency FabriQate to launch Q Mobao to help Western developers create iOS and Android apps for the Chinese market. It has also launched a similar initiative in South Korea.

Targeting specific markets is not just about local content, of course.

Last week IDC published figures (via Bloomberg) for smartphone market share in India, and it turns out that Apple has only a tiny part of the market in that country, shipping just over 62,000 iPhones to India in the last quarter, less than it shipped to Norway. That gives Apple a 2.6 percent share of the smartphone market in India. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) currently enjoys the biggest share of the market in India, with 46 percent.

With India the second-largest mobile market after China, that is a big miss for Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). IDC notes that part of the issue has been a lack of widespread 3G network for fast mobile data services. Although users can still connect by WiFi, that’s an impractical solution for a person on the move.

Google India head Rajan Anandan yesterday announced in a press conference that it has joined hands with the Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan to promote its new social network, Google+. He also added that the actor who is often referred to as the “The King of Bollywood,” will be one of the first Indian celebrities to join Google+.

As per the agreement, Shahrukh Khan will participate in live video chats with fans using the Google+ Hangouts feature over the next couple of weeks. In return, the Internet giant will promote Shahrukh’s forthcoming sci-fi movie “Ra.One” through YouTube and Google+.

Mr. Rajan Anandan said:

“We are very pleased to associate with Shahrukh Khan to create a unique and customised destination for Ra.One on YouTube (NSDQ: GOOG). In the last few years, Indian production houses have begun to embrace the YouTube platform to engage fans, distribute movies and leverage rich media ad formats to promote their movies online. Bollywood is now an integral part of the YouTube experience and reaches over 22 million unique users in India. With this channel we want to demonstrate how YouTube can be used creatively to connect with the highly engaged YouTube community in India and across the world.”

The movie sports a custom built YouTube channel, which Mr. Anandan claimed to be the first of its kind for a Bollywood movie. It will offer exclusive video content like unseen footage of the star cast, behind the scenes shots, videos of the Ra.One premiere and red carpet events planned in London, and host various contests to engage the fans.

In a similiar fashion, Google+ will also feature numerous social games and a digital comic based on the movie.

Speaking about this agreement, Shahrukh Khan said:

“YouTube is an incredibly powerful platform to engage fans across the globe and is integral to all blockbuster movie promotions in Hollywood. For Ra.One, I wanted to leverage the full potential of digital media and create an experience on YouTube and Google+ that has never been done for any Indian film. I am very excited about the project and am personally working with the Google team to create a destination that my fans can enjoy from anywhere in the world.”

Will it Work?

Roping in Shahrukh Khan to promote Google+ is definitely a good move to attract the common man but I am little sceptical about whether users will come back to use the service once these promotions die down.

However, Google+ already sports 4 million early adopters from India and the market penetration of Google services in the country is pretty impressive as well.

Hence if the company manages to get more celebrities and brands on board with a localized marketing push like it did with Google Chrome, it might just help Google+ gain the required traction from users. What do you think?

One of iPad’s flagship apps wants to help publishers sell ads by flipping back to familiar old print rules. “One of the big problems with the web is that it scrolls,” Flipboard CEO Mike McCue told our recent paidContent Advertising conference.

“When something scrolls, you can’t put a full-page ad there,” McCue said. “We want to create a paginated experience. That allows for full-page, print-style ads.

“The web, as wonderful as it is, is not able to render content beautifully, the monetization model has been challenging, it’s not a good experience for readers. Print is flat; it doesn’t move - there’s a lot of good things about that.

“Don’t have infinite inventory,” McCue told advertisers in the audience. “There should be scarcity to the inventory. Sell to the people who are buying print ads from you.”

Tomorrow Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) holds a major launch event and will likely unveil its first tablet, according to TechCrunch named the Kindle Fire. To date, everyone bar Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has failed with tablet launches. If Amazon mimics Apple then its tablet will fail too. Apple has too many economies of scale, industrial design expertise and supplier relationships for a retail-centric company like Amazon to emulate. Especially, if the Amazon tablet has taken a fast route to market by using the same ODM hardware manufacturer as RIM.

To succeed, Amazon must, and I’m sure will, take a different approach.

The success of the Kindle shows Amazon is prepared to think differently from others and to disrupt its own products — in the Kindle’s case to disrupt the cash cow of print book sales — in order to be innovative and seize early advantage in digital markets. If Amazon’s hardware is undifferentiated and virtually the same as RIM’s PlayBook then Amazon has to differentiate elsewhere with content, experience and business models. Otherwise it will suffer the same fate as RIM’s PlayBook.

Amazon cares little about the post-PC world, unlike Apple and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) who are playing that different game. Instead, Amazon is driven by a post disc and post print world where all media will be digital.

Amazon will build a true media tablet. The first true media tablet. The Kindle tablet will focus on the future of all media — TV, movies, music, books, magazines — to enable Amazon to become the dominant digital media retailer. That is Amazon’s ambition.

On that basis, here are the areas to watch for in Amazon’s tablet product launch and what impact each item will have on the market:

—The extent to which the Kindle tablet’s business model is content-subsidized. Few devices enjoy a lower up front price because of content subsidy. It’s hard to do. Games consoles are the obvious exception but even in that market history is awash with console failures. Nintendo’s 3DS is the most recent struggler. Outside of games almost all devices are priced without a content subsidy. Even Apple sees content revenues as icing rather than a key profit centre that would warrant a lower up front price for iPads or iPhones. Carriers too subsidise iPhones based on communication revenues, not media. Arguably, only Amazon’s own Kindle eReader has extended a content-led device sales model outside of the games market. If Amazon offers its tablet for a very low price, based on expectations of future content sales, then Amazon will successfully disrupt the market and enjoy very significant sales. If the price is tied to hardware costs, then the price will be less aggressive and Amazon’s tablet will compete at a similar price to rivals and consumers will judge it based on the overall product package.

—The extent of the app catalogue available at launch and soon afterwards. If the tablet is based on Android 2.x then it should be compatible with most existing Android smartphone apps, but ironically won’t work with the tablet interface-optimized Honeycomb Android apps. But there’s not many of those, so that won’t matter for now. Additionally, app creators will need to submit their apps to Amazon’s app store and accept Amazon’s terms. This is not a given. Amazon’s control over app pricing has upset some app creators. (See app developer bit hack’s views or the letter from the International Game Developers Association.

—The type of colour screen used: LCD or Mirasol / eInk. If Amazon uses an LCD, like PC notebooks and the iPad, then the device will be highly suited for video playback but have poor daylight visibility. This means there will be a continuing need for existing eInk Kindles that work well outside and are super light due to their need for only a small battery. Amazon will likely position its tablet as a complement and attempt to sell cross sell tablets and traditional Kindles. If Qualcomm Mirasol or a colour eInk screen is included then the tablet will be more eReader than iPad and be positioned as a replacement device to existing Kindles. This is much less likely due to both the state of that screen technology and to Amazon’s desire to establish a strong video on demand service.

—Whether there is any business relationship with Google, for example the inclusion of Google apps like Gmail or Maps. Leaks suggest the Amazon tablet is based upon Android v2 — not the 3.x Honeycomb version which underpins Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy 10.1 — and lacks any of Google’s proprietary apps. Amazon would not be the first tablet maker to ship hardware with no access to Google’s app store. But existing firms that have done that — Archos, Viewsonic and numerous no-name brands — are too small to worry Google… unlike Amazon. If the Kindle tablet embarks on this path of using Android but offering no upside to Google by supporting Google’s own businesses such as maps, advertising, search, docs, Gmail then expect Google to continue to take greater control over Android. Already, the Honeycomb source code is not publicly available, unlike older versions, which means hardware makers need to work with Google to ship devices that use Honeycomb and are unable to go it alone. In this scenario, Google will likely take the same approach with Ice Cream and other future Android updates and Android will become less and less open.

—The role for new visual eBook and magazine formats. With a colour screen Amazon is no longer limited to simple text and black & white illustrations. Will Amazon now release full format eBooks to replace or complement existing Kindle editions? Will existing eBook buyers have to buy again to enjoy new editions? How will Amazon manage compatibility between current low res black and white eInk Kindles and the tablet? Lots to watch for here.

—Type of connectivity, 3G / WiFi, and route to market. If Amazon ships a purely WiFi-based tablet then its route to market will be simple retail. But Whispersync will be less effective due to the sporadic connectivity as Kindle tablet owners move outside of WiFi network range and so the tablet’s role as a complementary device will be hurt. Despite that minor issue, this is by far the most straightforward option for Amazon.

—If Amazon offers Kindle tablet with an embedded 3G mobile radio: as it does for the Kindle 3 and Apple does with the iPad — then Amazon will have a dilemma of how to price and package mobile data. I’d be very surprised if Amazon was able to emulate the Kindle 3′s data model: a mobile data cost that is hidden from Kindle owners in a slightly higher one-off up front device purchase price. The additional data that on demand movies and a cloud-centric music service require will make this too costly and difficult. If there is a 3G model, Amazon will likely emulate the iPad, with pay as you go data pricing or traditional carrier contracts. I see little advantage for Amazon with that approach, so again, a WiFi-model is the most likely design but is also the least exciting.

—Communication features: will the Kindle tablet have a camera for video chat or an email app? If it lacks either, it re-enforces that Amazon is not choosing to go head to head with Apple. This is a media tablet first and only, unlike the iPad which Apple is positioning as the future successor to the PC in a post-PC world. Amazon’s vision is not about the future of computing. It’s delivering the future of media and media retailing.

After the launch event, I’ll loop back here and update this post.
