Anybody read Neelakannukal, apparently the first Indian mobile novel, in Malayalam, that has received 600 downloads? Rediff reports that P R Harikumar, who wrote this novel, is in talks with the cellular operators for making it available on demand. The file is just 70kb, and requires a Java enabled phone. The distribution was online and 600 seems to be the cutoff for free distribution. What prevents someone from transferring the downloaded JAR file from one user to another?
Mobile2Win’s Rajiv Hiranandani says that their experiment with momics (as mobile comics are called) in China was a success, and they plan to introduce English and then multilingual comics in India soon. Their experiment with Amar Chitra Katha on the mobile was a success too, but I’m wondering what their definition of ‘success’ is. The cost of access - Rs.1-2 a day, or a monthly subscription.
I used to read pdf’s of short stories and novels on the phone while travelling, but it was always tedious. With mobile comics, I suppose pdf’s wont be viable for comics because of the filesize…Java seems to be the way to go. Any other format? Some of our coverage of this mobile-lit segment:
