The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC) reports goBroadband. As is usually the case with government designed websites, the usability is poor. One issue is that one needs to register with the mobile operators instead of being able to register directly, online. It takes 45 days for one to be added to the registry. Similarly, complaints need to be filed with the mobile operator—so then what’s the point of the website, apart from disseminating information?

The issue that I have with a do-not-call registry is that the registry is circulated among telemarketers - how safe is that data, and how does one ensure that the data isn’t sold off to other marketers? There’s no way out, I guess… However, telemarketers are required to register with the NDNC, and will be fined Rs 500 per call/message. The defaulting telemarketer will face disconnection of Telecom service.
