TimesJobs Claims No. 1 Position; Kicks Off “Everyone is quitting naukri” Ad Campaign

Updated by Rafat: We’re closing the comments on this post….too much mud-slinging.
The battle for the number one position in online recruitment classifieds market has taken a new turn. TimesJobs.com has taken out an advertisement saying “Everyone is quitting naukri”, probably a pun-intended campaign against Naukri.com. TimesJobs claimed 3.075 million resumes which are 0-6 months old, while it said the the nearest rival (read Naukri) has only 2.73 million active resumes.
In a page one article (a plug job for the group company) in The Economic Times, TimesJobs.com has claimed that it is the number one jobs site with 150 million page views a month, while the nearest competitor has only 120 million page views a month. The article quotes Vineet Jain, MD of the Times Group: “We just put our heads down and worked hard. A smartly differentiated product, backed by a great team, cutting edge technology and superb communication did the trick for TimesJobs.com. Our understanding of new media helped us cracking the market in less than three years.”
Now the battle for number one position is being hijacked by TimesJobs. It used to be Naukri versus Monster India earlier. Sanjeev Bikhchandani, MD of Info Edge Ltd, the owner of Naukri.com, could not be reached for comments. However, our sources suggest that Naukri is “reviewing the matter, and will come out with a response in a few days time”. A rival of TimesJobs told ContentSutra that the company has encouraged duplication of resumes.
What are the options for Naukri now: It can either come up with its own campaign with their own set of numbers to counter TimesJobs claim. Or Naukri can take TimesJobs to court for using the phrase “Everyone is quitting naukri”. An industry source told ContentSutra: “The latter option is a possibility but may not be the smartest option, though.” So it’s likely Naukri will come up with a counter campaign. Watch this space.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani, MD of Naukri.com, responds:
1. As per Alexa and Comscore, Naukri remains by far the leading job site in India. On Alexa the three month reach of Naukri at 855 today is thrice that of TimesJobs which is at 257. According to Comscore, Naukri got more than 2.3 million unique users in February as compared to slightly more than 1.3 million of Timesjobs.
2. In fact, as per Alexa, TimesJobs has slipped to fourth place behind Clickjobs.
3. The statistic that TimesJobs is referring to is “Active” resumes in the last six months, not total resumes. Here TimesJobs has a different definition of “Active” as compared to Naukri. In TimesJobs, if you open a job alert email and click on a job in the email to go to the site you are treated as an active user. In Naukri, you are an active user only if you update your CV or apply for a job or are a new registrant. We do not count clicking on a job in a job alert as being “Active”.
4. Finally, TimesJobs is encouraging people to register more than once on their site.

Update: Alexa is not the best of the measurement tool. However, it’s the most popular. See a check done by us below. Naukri is far ahead in page views. And what is also surprising is ClickJobs.com (of BharatMatrimony group) has shot into the top league.

    Gentlemen ,
I participated in this forum to find out the truth about this raging debate but unfortunately this forum has degenerated into a total mudslinging match. The most unfortunate thing is people who don't have guts to reveal themselves hide behind identity of other people to sling muck.
I have huge respect for both Sanjeev and Sundar both of whom have had huge successes in their lifetimes Gentlemen please have some regards for these Gentlemen and respect their achievements think twice before you impersonate them to sling mud. Its people like you who force free forums like this to become moderated

  • Sanjeev

    Hi Rakesh,

I agree with the status - but hey, its as of today. I'm sure these new players have something up their sleeve do differentiate in the market for the future which already has 2 / 3 leaders… Don't you think? Why else would they be in the market? The first things to note are… better homepage & easier navigation… clearer, clutter free & then new functions like Blogs which came in from yellojobs and everyone just copied. Better search mechanisms, teasing passive jobseekers from Clickjobs, tech only profiles from Dice & so on.

  • Aniruddh

Nice To See every Top Shots of the segment fighting against proving themselves and their organisation better on these small ground (s)......

I doubt the if the Views are actually written by any Vistitor….

    Plz. Carry on…..!!!!

  • Rakesh Mathur

    Hi Sanjeev,

Dice is a flopshow in India and is poorly managed. Its over and done.

Yellojobs is also a flopshow…there is no management bandwidth there..lets not discuss about that too

The industry consists of 3 online players Naukri, Monsterindia and clickjobs and a online/offline player called timesjobs who is fightng for position #3.

  • Sameer Pathak

U r right Mr Sundar :) you are paid to impersonate, lie and decieve in name of senior Timesjobs functionary by Naukri and I am paid to lead from the front for timesjobs…Not a fight of equals ! Bring on the guys who are hiding behind you and this name…I am sure Mr Bhikchandani would not be appreciating his people paying for impersonating senior Timesjobs people…one Mr Sundar was enough of a competition for him…ab unke office maiin bhi :)

I dont think anyone is more happy than the clients….try renewing your contracts now at 70% increased pitching :) bahut nuksaan karr diya clients ka….ab

    tumhe chun chun ke maarenge…

    keh dena naukri walon sse…

  • Sanjeev

This entire press release is aimed at employers who are just a handful… what really matters for millions of jobseekers is that they find a job when they require one. Who bothers if there are 30 / 50 lac resumes??? Ever thought of this Tee-Jay??? I think the new age job sites like Dice, clickjobs, yellowjobs are more sensitive to this fact.

  • Rakesh Mathur

Dear Timesjobs employees aka stupid dudes,

    1. Dont post responses using my name ...thats a cheap trick .

    2. Timesjobs techies seems to be knowiing more about faking alexa than anybody else here. hehehehe….

3.Timesjobs is not a jobsite but a sales arm of Times accent and Jobfairs. Going forward they'll condust Jobfairs for Bus Drivers in Jalgaon.

    4. Timesjobs is a fresher site.

    5. Its got the worst UL among all jobsites.

    6.Cutting edge technology - My Foot…

7.Sanjeev will not respond to these guys anymore because his organisation is not fighting with timesjobs at all.

    8. Times guys should try their level best to get back the 3rd position from the newbie clickjobs. ...and monsterindia..watch out…these clickjobs guys are beating u in traffic for the past 2 week consecutively.

    9. Times is in the internet space for the past 10 years or so…and tell me one successful business model on the internet from them. Timesjobsandcareers.com was a flop and had to pack bags…..and then, they've rechristined the same tinpot into timesjobs in 2003.. Most of the timesjobs employees wouldn't know this. because they are "bachas" of the industry.

    10. Sanjeev is 100 times more intelligent that the guys who run timesjobs and he will never enter into a comptetion or arguement with timesjobs, because they dont deserve any attention in the industry

11.Jokes of this decade = Timesjobs and its press releases. ... compiling all the press releases will make a good joke book :)

  • R. Sundar

Sameer pathak of Timesjobs gets his salary to type such words. How come 95% of the clients use Naukri when only 30 - 50% of them have Monster, Clickjobs, etc.  as their 2nd choice? The real market share is in the MARKET and not on self proclaimed news articles!

    Enjoy! :D

  • Sameer Pathak

Awwwwwww…..Did I hear a heart break ????? :) Naukri is left reeling from a powerful hook and punch from Timesjobs….let them go the clients and prove the data otherwise. All the bunkum about Alexa and ComScore will stand no water. For years, Naukri has fooled people and clients into believing Alexa has the de-facto rating system. Zara ssi hawa chali….aur pura manzaar badal gaya :)....And for all the naysayers and doubting thomases….wake up and smell the coffee !!

As for Naukri….I have nothing more apt to say right now…..

ibtada hai ishq hai…rota hai kya…
aage aage dekhiye ...hota hai kya…

    enjoyyyyyyyyyyy

  • Madhu Rao

This is corporate rape at its finest. Naukri is now forced to step up as far as their media campaign goes; and Times will bleed them dry. What Naukri should do is not worry about the blitz and focus on the building their base on a more stronger footing. At the end of the day what matters is quality and not fluff. But I am sure that Naukri will do the opposite and instead try to match TOI in its lung power. I give it 6 to 8 months max; before a press release of a merger or a buyout happens.

  • Priya Jain

Actualy I agree with Sanjeev the real measure of how good a job site is to a recruiter is how many active job seekers it has ( I understand that the measure in the market of active is how many resumes has been put on the site or has been updated in the last 3 months) The more resumes a site has which are less than 3 months the more relevant resumes a recruiter gets thereby more calls to a jobseeker.
Any one has any data on how many active resumes Naukri Monsterindia Timesjobs and clickjobs has which are 3 month fresh. This data could throw a lot of light on this raging debate. also lets keep this discussion healthy without getting into a mudslinging > lets look at logic and judge the real NO1 for ourselves

  • Prasath

How come you ever think that clickjobs, naukri, and monster is using Bots.,
Dont wonder on how others bring traffic., Use that time to think on how to bring traffic to your own site .,

  • Sarathy

Well Clickjobs.com is fairly new entrant into the market. How can it generate so much traffic so as to beat everyone including Monster and coming so close to Naukri. Well here is alexa for you. Fragile

This is the most ignorant post at.,
    http://powerjob.blogspot.com/

There is no need to fake boost alexa rank, There is another natural way., I think you should grow up

  • Prasath

I dont believe Naukri.com will respond to such childish acts ., They are mature and focussed.,
Filing a case against timesjobs will only give negative publicity to timesjobs.,  THey are not even close to naukri to claim anything like that.,

  • "Show me the Revenue Numbers."
The Alexa traffic or the web traffic does not automatically translate to revenue.
There is too much hype in the Indian internet industry (Job portal or Matrimonials) to claim that they are No.1 purely based on Alexa Traffic.
If they are truely an e-commerce play then It's time for them to reveal their revenue and profit .
Naukri, as part of going public has revealed their revenue (Partially).
It's time for other portals to reveal revenue.

For all those who believe Alexa rankings are of any significance - how easily they can be fooled if they use this parameter. Here is an article from the web, with one comment from me in blue. $ 5000 is all it requires to get your site in top 100. Check this to increase your personal site rating AlexaBooster.com.

With the launch of Alexadex “share trading” and more and more sites using Alexa rankings as a way to judge their popularity (mostly because it is the only alternative); especially for ad selling, I thought it would be nice to revisit the manipulation of Alexa, an Amazon.com company. Alexa rankings are based on the amount of times users with the Alexa toolbar installed on their computers visit a web site over a given amount of time. VM Comments- (This bar is hardly downloaded by any users in India giving a skewed base.( How many people you know have this downloaded?) . It is not an accepted mechanism for measurement in India and the download by 200 people of an interested company could completely change the rankings of its website , adding a manipulation software would make it even better without doing work to get traffic)

  • Chetan

I Guess TimesjObs has become No 1 site….it always had good job opening. Naukri and click jobs are simply getting panic…

  • Vishal

The authenticity of that made up letter gets crystal clear the moment anyone clicks on the understated link….

  • Finally, Timesjobs is encouraging people to register more than once on their site.

This will again tend to give a higher number of active users to TImesjobs. However many will not be unique.

The email below from Timesjobs to a colleague of mine in naukri is self explanatory

now we have Mr. Sanjeev Bikhchandani joining the forum…i used to believe that he had more important things to do…now i know the real reasons for dipping performance of naukri….

  • I am reading the comments on Alexa, Naukri, Clickjobs and TImesjobs with some not inconsiderable interest.

Both Alexa and Comscore have their problems. Neither is perfect. Alexa is a self selected sample and Comscore in India has a smaller sample size as compared to Comscore.

However over the years both have improved their methodology.

Nevertheless what we at naukri do is to look at both. If both are giving the same directional trends or ranking then with experience we have concluded that they are probably telling the truth.

It is when they are saying different things that we believe the jury is out.

Both are clearly saying that the rankings of the Job sites in India are :

    1. Naukri

    2. Monsterindia

    3. & 4.  Comscore and Alexa are saying different things. Comscore shows Timesjobs as No. 3 and Clickjobs as No. 4 but growing and narrowing the gap with TImesjobs. Alexa shows that Clickjobs is ahead of Timesjobs

What I would conclude from the above is that there is a fight going on for the No. 3 and No. 4 spot among the jobsites in India. The exact position should be known in the next few months.

As far as No. of active CV's is concerned as I have said in my mail to Sahad (which he has quoted from in this article) it is the difference in the way the two sites define or qualify what is an active user that tends to dampen naukri active user nos. as compared to some of the other sites we compete with.

Once again we have learnt with experience that it is better to use more stringent criteria to qualify a job seeker as active as your database gets larger. This is because with a large database you will deliver enough CV's to a recruiter in a search anyway - it is better you show only the really active and committed job seekers so that the recruiter does not waste his time talking to people who are not really interested.

This works better for our customers and therefore for us.

    Manipulating Alexa Traffic Rankings

I was talking with a friend about Alexa this week and how so many advertising companies, like AdBrite, use Alexa rankings as a way to measure a site’s worth. Alexa is also apparently quite easy to manipulate.

Here’s a step by step trick from Sitepoint Forums member KLB:

    1) install the Alexa toolbar into your browser.

    2) Create a special webpage that contains a JavaScript array of webpage addresses from your site. Then create a JavaScript function that loops through the array and opens each address into a separate browser window (make sure they all use the same window). Between cycles through the function, cause the function to “sleep” using the “timer()” function for a random interval of time between say 5 and 45 seconds. Make sure that when the function reaches the end of the array of addresses it loops back to the beginning.

    3) Periodically set the script to action in your browser with the Alexa toolbar installed and let it churn away overnight. To save bandwidth you can always disable the loading of images. If you want it to be really effective, have a few friends run the same script from their browsers with the Alexa toolbar installed.

That is all there is to it. I did this about a half dozen times to one of my sites over a period of one month and it jumped up to the 80,000 mark in Alexa. I’m sure if I ran it more often it would have done even better.

Or, you can buy your way to a top Alexa ranking via AlexaBooster, which uses some sort of traffic exchange desktop software to boost site views by browsers equipped with Alexa. For $300 a month AlexaBooster claims to secure a 10,000 or above ranking for its customers, for $5,000 a month, a ranking of 100 or above.

    AlexaBooster sales copy :

Are you looking for top rankings on alexa.com? If so then you have come to the right place! Alexabooster has been boosting thousands of sites for over 3 years!

Using the alexabooster software can boost your ranking anywhere from 100K or better! Alexabooster is a simple 3 step software that runs hidden in your sytem tray.

And then there is AlexaSurf which differentiates itself with the forementioned Booster tool by not using exchange software but connecting publishers with publishers - humans with humans - for site visiting exchanges to boost traffic popularity numbers:

We have created a tool that does not use any third party software to try and manipulate stats. Our system simply allows you to take part in a traffic exchange system for ONLY users who are using the alexa toolbar. This system will increase your rankings and give you the advantage online.

Our system is the only Free alexa tool that will allow you to boost your rankings without risk of having your site banned. Please feel free to signup and test out or system.

I doubt that many publishers are spending $5,000 a month to boost Alexa stats, as true site traffic stats would give more weight to selling ads or trading links than Alexa numbers. But after reading these posts and services, I can’t help but think twice when viewing Alexa stats and feel that they should be taken with a grain of salt more than anything.

When measuring the popularity of a site, along with Alexa rankings one should also review incoming links, web citations (are people talking about the site), request stat & analytics info, and even look a bit into blog rankings in Technorati or Feedster along with Google PageRank. A well rounded approach to judging a site’s worth will give you a much more open idea of value than one set of numbers.

  • amit

    vishal,

if mr Sanjeev Bikhchandani has to spek he will certainly not do so in a blogspot…he has better places to do the same…and i know timesjobs only 4 the last 1 year but naukri for the last 6 years…guys this company has money backup and it is the most happening company when it comes to indian recruitment….

  • Rakesh Mathur

I am amazed but its true. timesjobs has actually beaten all of the rest. naukri is history it seems. ppl just check out times…amit ure right buddy

  • Vishal

Sanjeev Bikhchandani of Naukri has responded in the post. But there may be an official response.
Come on guys…timesjobs cannot beat Naukri in jobs…but i think magicbricks can give a tough fight to 99acres.com…and if their claim had been in the property space, i would have believed it.

  • amit

and 4 god sake stop believing that fake and dumb alexa…we all know how that silly thing works

  • amit

Hey guys, whats wrong with you all…i certainly believe that timesjobs has beaten everyone ...thats why they have come openly in print about it….if you guys are really sure of what u are saying…then why hasnt naukri spoken about it….and any of you who believe in that fake alexa rankings please come out of your reveries..and check out the recruitment portals 4 actuals numbers ..i am a timesjobs user and i have billed 15 lacs out of my clients in 5 months,...

  • Maanav Shah

Oh my God, whats happening here?

    Naukri rocks and whats timesjobs.com??

  • Rakesh Mathur

    Priya Jain,
I think you guys need basic lessons in analysing traffic reports by alexa. Look at the comparitive trend. Its completely uniform. As i said, You guys are just trying hard with a tinpot site and press release. This market requires substance and experience in online business models. As i recommended , you, amit and all can spend today's evening googling on something called "UI"  and look at improving tge same in your timesjobs.
Also, ask your sales guys to sell online recruitment solutions at decent prices and not for 30K for 5 years :) . Then the market will take you guys seriously. Till then keep trying harder with Press Releases in group publications :)

  • Priya Jain

    Hi Rakesh,
I think this forum is raising some valuable points why dont you make a objective contribution to this forum based facts.
Good point you raised Amit wonder why Clickjobs traffic peaks on weekends on alexa whereas all other sites peak on weekdays. Rakesh any conspiracy theories on this.
    Cheers

  • Prasath

Amit, I think you are ignorant on alexa boostings and all those stuffs.,
Alexa ranking Can NEVER be boosted if your site's ranking is below 5000.,
Running bots on weekends is really immature and funny.,
Naukri is clearly the No.1 jobs site as of today.,  Timesjobs thinking to even compare with naukri with their messed up site is even immature than your posts

  • Rakesh Mathur

    Amit,

You are supposed to fight it out with naukri.com according to your boss's brief.. dont mess up . Its appraisal time :) .. stick to the objective. and dont blabber. Alexa has fixed the loopholes longback. You guys are still in 80's. Now am sure you are part of timesjobs's tech team ;P…hehehehe

  • Amit

    Priya,

One interesting trend to show easily Alexa is gulpable. See the trends of ClickJobs.com. Somehow traffic peak only on weekends for clickjobs.com whereas for all the sites - it peaks on weekdays.

Seems they can only run the bot only on weekends :)

  • Rakesh Mathur

Looks like the entire marketing/ops team of Timesjobs is googling for links to prove that alexa is wrong :) ROFL… Fix up you jobsite guys, rather than wasting time googling. It looks yuck. You guys are No.4…period :)

  • Mallika

Well I am seeing this discussion. Seems like lot of people have now discovered that ALEXA is fake and so is Naukri.

    Nice post Rishi.

Here’s a little data - last week RateItAll was written up by both John Battelle’s Search Blog and Pete Cashmore’s Mashable.

We got about 200 visitors combined from the two posts (on a day which we did close to 30K uniques).

It was quality traffic, and we very much appreciated it.

But we’re talking about a net boost in traffic of under 1%.

Yet our Alexa reach for the day tripled - from about 100 per million to about 300 per million.

An tiny influx of tech savvy visitors, some of whom have the Alexa toolbar, was enough to triple our “reach.”

I think it’s preposterously misleading how a number of very influential bloggers (and guys who should know better) insist on touting a site’s success or failure by checking their Alexa rankings.

Doesn’t anyone besides Rishi understand this?

  • Rakesh Mathur

    Amit..stop crying foul dude :p
Manipulation to reach some 20000 rank in alexa is possible some 2 years back but getting into the big league requires real traffic and a tinpot site like timesjobs can never achieve that :) Moreover alexa has fixed all the loopholes about a month back. Now its not possible to do whatever u r saying.
@Priya Jain : yeah..i've seen.. very surprising to note that Clickjobs is No.2. I think clickjobs guys are foussing more on business than doing false press releases :) . I think their TV ad has done wonders..its kinda different from the standard cliche of others..what say?

  • Priyank

Amit, Sahad -> You might be right about Alexa. Naukri folks have generally inflated their rankings by Alexa.

See what SEO experts have to say:

In general, I would encourage you not to pay too much attention to the Alexa numbers as a way of judging the true popularity of a site, and also keep in mind that there are many advertising methods that bring traffic besides the search engines.

Wow its interesting to see this war starting off all over again. I was just going through the alexa ratings surprise surprise clickjobs is No 2 job site today. In fact on a few days they were nearly equal to naukri. I would urge users to compare the growth of clickjobs on alexa surprising indeed…...

Can alexa ratings be played with I really wonder. ....If it were me I would take alexa ratings with a pinch of salt.

  • Rakesh Mathur

Timesjobs is just an extended sales arm of Times Accent. I've never heard of them selling their online solutions. Technologically, they are still in 80's and i really dont understand what made them claim "cutting edge" technology..hehe
I was told by the guys from the industry that they dont even consider Timesjobs as competition, forget a threat :)
And finally Sanjeev indirectly nailed the coffin :P
Knowing the maturity level of naukri guys, they'll not even respond to this hungama because timesjobs is trying hard to get into the big league for the last 4 years and will continue trying ;)..Nice try…hehehehe

  • Priya

One of the reasons for low ranking of timesjobs is that the landing page that they use for online advertising and resume capture is not hosted on their domain, their landing page is hosted on tribalddb's(online marketing agency) server and thus all traffic that comes from their online advertising does not count towards their alexa traffic.

Perhaps somebody should use common sense at timesjobs and redirect all the advertising traffic to timesjobs domain.

May be the alexa story will be a lot different then.

  • Sanjeev Bikhchandani responed to TimesJobs ad here :-)

    Lets believe that:
    Naukri is number one.
    Clickjobs.com & Monster.com at par.
    Times is dead investment.

timesjobs.com instead of going for a "Brand Share" is focusing on "MORE, THE BETTER" campaign. Leaders don't need numbers to prove…market speaks for them.

"Monster" is smart and talking about solution of providing the "right job". Number of pages or views is immaterial. How effective and useful is your website will create salience and edge over others.

    Hi

These are screwd up comments by TimesJobs. Naukri is the leader since their inception and they would be the leader. I should rather say that 'Every Employee of Times is quitting it' because they know that they can never compete with the naukri people. They are always on hunt of picking up people from naukri.

They should be taken to court.

heheheh…joke of the century…20000 resumes per day was the previous best joke…now this..rofl.. these timesjobs guys have gone mad. Just checked alexa. You are right sahad. looks like they've lost the 3rd spot to clickjobs.com consecutively for the past 2 months. This is probably a "survival press release" :). Looks like this clickjobs.com guys have surpassed monsterindia also on reach. Thats really surprising !. So now according to Alexa Its naukri at No.1, Clickjobs at No.2, Monsterindia at No.3 and Timesjobs took the last spot. :)

This is a gross abuse by Times of their media power.  Naukri should haul them to them to court.

timesjobs.com should focus and establish its brand identity as MOST EFFECTIVE JOB WEBSITE.
Comparison with page views is not good enough. Effective Reach and providing solution of RIGHT JOB is more important than number of resumes posted.
Monster is smart with its tactical campaign "Double your chances of getting the right job" and positioning itself as solution provider for RIGHT JOB.
