Kunal Dasgupta, the CEO of Multi Screen Media, who placed enormous bets on the success of the Indian Premier League, has left the company. MSM broadcasts Sony (NYSE: SNE) Entertainment Television and SET Max, among others. It’s a JV between Japan’s Sony Corp. and a clutch of Indian investors, whose several attempts to exit have been unsuccessful.

We spoke to Dasgupta, and he confirmed that he has left the company. “I believe i have set Sony on a path of growth and there is nothing left for me to do there. So i left,” he said. We asked him if his exit was related to the recent controversy over IPL’s DTH rights. “I’m leaving after settling the IPL issue. These are not related,” he said. When asked if he was starting his own venture or joining another company, he said: “I’m just going to play golf.”

The announcement was made earlier today by Andy Kaplan, president, international networks, Sony Pictures television International. A Sony release said Manjit Singh, chairman of the board of MSM Ltd, will serve as interim CEO. Singh will also lead the search for a new CEO, the release said.
