[By Cerius Shah] After posting a profit last fiscal, Sify plans to sell 30,000 thin client computers in nine Indian cities in the first year of launch. The PC’s will be most likely priced at Rs 5,000 per box. According to this Mint  article, research firm IDC mentioned 42,723 thin clients were sold in India in 2006.

Cloud computing is still in the very nascent stages, besides basic productivity software there isn’t much scope for a full desktop experience currently. Add to that the quality and cost of broadband to connect to the cloud and one wonders how many of the 42,723 are local network setups compared to a typical end user who would like access to the web.

Other efforts include Chennai based Novatium’s Net PC, the Reliance ADA and OLPC pilot project for the XO ($220).
