Sci-Fi Flick Love Story 2050 To Launch PC Game

You are reading it here first. The approximately Rs 60 crore expensive futuristic love story starring newcomer Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra will be launching a PC game as well. While the concept of movie-based games isn’t new (although almost all have been huge critical failures, while some like Path of Neo, have been commercial successes inspite of it), its a first for a Bollywood film. Early screenshots (below) indicate it to be a fairly low poly engine, presumably based on Directx 9. Development on the game has been done by Rocking Pixels in co-ordination with various undisclosed US based firms. Not much on the developer besides a search synopsis stating they develop for the PC, 360 and the PS3. Currently, the website prides itself on its anonymity. Hyderabad based FX Labs is another developer currently developing a title for the now 2 year old, Dhoom 2. Its previous attempt at a PC game based on Malaika Arora Khan, titled Agni, sank without a trace. There doesn’t seem to be a mobile variant of the Love Story game .Is it more viable to create a low cost flash game, like Zapak did for Bhootnath, or walk down the green mile and hedge bets on platforms, development and retail releases? I wager putting all my earnings on the casual end of the ring.

Considering the various merchandising options available around the movie, there will be a huge thrust on the ancillary market. The movie features special effects executed by the likes of Weta and John Cox, so there is already a fair amount of data in terms of textures and models which could be used. While the movie is scheduled to be released on July 4, the game is expected to be launched sometime in June with a price point around the Rs 199 mark. As with any movie based game release, its fate rests on the popularity of the main franchise, one which remains to be seen.

Interesting - FxLabs is also developing a game on Aamir Khan’s forthcoming Ghajini. Incidentally, i also wrote an article on LoveStory 2050 and how their Wikipedia Page was attacked by someone in Delhi - http://www.watblog.com/2008/05/16/watblog-spots-harman-baweja-and-love-story-2050-attacked-on-wikipedia/
Quite scandalous - they changed the picture and poked fun at Harman by changing his name to Hrithik etc. The strategy being followed is the Hollywood studio strategy. This is something a lot of movies in India can do - given their cultural significance in the average Indian’s life. They should look at things beyond the Hollywood model.

screen grabs dont a good game make (thank you master yoda). I just hope the game developers focus on game play and making a good game and not a promotional product for the movie… its the setting, the characters and the thought of time travel that is important not harman and priyanka or anyone else.

saw the promo on You Tube, though i cant say for sure, i think i saw influences of several international movies ( a robot that emotes a la robbie williams movie), a fuzzy cute alien companion ( a mix of R2D2/C3P0 and the cute fuzzies in Return of the Jedi) a yellow cab chase scene (5th Element) but then in just a 2 minute promo what can u say.

For a Made-In-India game, that doesn’t look too bad

What does that mean….For a made in India gme that doesnt look bad?

It insinuates that Made in India products are bad and this is better. I disagree. We should not say bad things about everyone else, to protect a few people who deliver products not upto global standard.

If they cant make a global standard game, they shouldnt be in the business. If they cant afford to make it or they arent getting enough money for it, they should definately not then make a noise about it.

The company has posted a reply on theangrypixel blog saying that these are their inhouse engine tests and not from 2050. You can read the reply there
