Raghav Bahl Funded Tangerine Digital To Launch Youth Portal - Campus18
You’re reading it here first: Tangerine Digital, a company in which TV18 MD Raghav Bahl has a substantial financial stake, is in the process of launching a youth portal called Campus18.
Campus18 (domain registration) is expected to be launched on 10th August, and has been operating in stealth mode for over 6 months now. They’ve recently started preparing for launch with a forum via which content for posts is being collected, and offline meets being organized…They’ve hired campus representatives from colleges in Delhi, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai etc, as well as hiring bloggers and photographers for featured content. They had an offline meet in Delhi last Sunday. While I agree that offline to online is the way to go, but does it justify the costs?
Campus18 is expected to have a music section, reviews, blogs and photographs - a portal with elements of social networking. Someone who was propositioned as a featured blogger told me that Tangerine is paying Rs. 3000 per month, with targets of 6-8 posts. They’re also inviting regular bloggers to write for them.
Now as per SEBI filings dated March 30, 2007 (pdf), TV18 MD Raghav Bahl’s investment vehicle VT Holdings (pg 147) owns 50 percent of Tangerine Digital (Pg 152). Tangerine had earlier bagged a deal for repurposing content for Source18, TV18’s outsourcing venture with Infosys BPO. Apart from Source18, Tangerine has done content related work for STAR India, ESPN Star Sports, National Geographic, among others, which some of the management team has worked for in the past…Puneet Johar, Founder and CEO of Tangerine was Sr. VP(Marketing) for Star India. Raghav Bahl is the “Mentor” of Tangerine Digital, and what’s interesting is that Campus18 is operating in the same domain as TV18 group company Web18…is there a conflict of interest here?
Disclaimer: I own an inconsequential number of shares of TV18 and related companies
