Quarterly Telecom Performance Report: India’s Internet Subscriber Base Declines Marginally
The TRAI has released a report “The Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators April – June 2007”, downloadable here.
Broadband
—As per Table 3.1 which gives details of subscriber base of 97 ISPs, number of subscribers has declined from 9,271,031 to 9,224,555 - a decline of 0.5 percent. While the decline may seem marginal, one would have wanted an increase. These numbers may not be indicative of total number of Internet users because users may access via cybercafes and the office.
—The number of broadband subscribers has increased to 2.422 million for the quarter ending June 2007. Of these: 1,984,193 are DSL based, 264,904 Cable Modem, 83,521 Ethernet LAN, 20,594 Fibre, 20466 Radio customers and 48541 Others.
—The growth rate of broadband subscribers in this quarter is 3.55% as compared to 13.85% in the previous quarter.
—Average Dialup minutes of usage was at 195 minutes per subscriber per month—still very low.
—Average Dialup ARPU per month for ISPs was Rs. 203/- for the quarter.
There are also details of quality of service for ISPs. In case of MTNL Delhi, I’ve noticed that complaints are considered resolved despite problems persisting, so I’m not sure of how reliable these indicators are. The marketshare of ISPs is as follows:
Wireless fared better, with an increase in total subscriber base, thouth APRU was at Rs. 297, down by Re. 1:
GSM:
—subscriber base increased by 12.72 percent.
—ARPU increased for the first time since March 2005, and was at Rs. 301 per month, up by Rs. 6 from the last quarter.
—Postpaid ARPU increased by 7 percent to Rs. 655 from Rs. 613 in March 07. Prepaid ARPU declined by 0.8 percent to Rs. 248.
—Minutes of use (MoU): 476, up 1 percent from 471 in Q1. Postpaid MoU declined by 5 percent to 997 from 1050, while prepaid MoU increased to 404 from 384
CDMA:
—ARPU per month was at Rs 206, up from Rs. 202 in Q1. Highest APRU in Mumbai - Rs. 318.
—Average MoU per subscriber per month was 462, with the highest MoU in Circle C at 538 per subscriber per month.
