Planning Commission Approves Rs2,000 Crore Spend For Crime Monitoring Network

The government will set up an ambitious information technology network, connecting some 14,000 police stations, some 6,200 key government offices such as passport offices and immigration counters, as well as courts. The Rs2,000 crore project was approved by the planning commission yesterday, TOI reports.

The project—Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems—will help make criminal and conviction records available to law enforcement agencies anywhere in the country and will also help prevent criminals from fleeing the country. The project will also facilitate better planning to counter crime by linking the National Crime Records Bureau with state bureaus, TOI says. The project is expected to be completed by 2010-11.
