Nokia Launches Life Tools, Commodity Prices From 291 Local Markets To Be Made Available

Handset maker Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today said it was rolling out its Life Tools product—designed for emerging markets—commercially in India. The service will be first rolled out in Maharashtra, where the service was being tested. The company today signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board,a government agency. The agency will make available information on commodity prices from 291 local mandis (markets) under it. “MSAMB will also have the opportunity to deliver relevant news, alerts on schemes and other information directly to grassroots consumers,” Nokia said in a press statement.
“We believe this is the beginning of a historical journey that will take mobility to grassroots and make a positive difference to the lives of people in the areas that are crucial to them,” Nokia India MD D. Sivakumar said in a statement.
The service will be initially available on the just launched Nokia 2323 classic and Nokia 2330 classic devices, and will be later expanded to other Nokia devices, the company said.
Nokia Life Tools comprises of agriculture, education and environment services. For the agriculture service, the company has partnered with Reuters Market Light, which has been providing agriculture-related data on SMS for a while now.
