Karnataka Post Offices To Sell Air Deccan Tickets
Low cost airline operator Air Deccan will soon start selling tickets at about 500 Internet-enabled post offices in Karnataka. [via Indiantelevision.com] Air Deccan was the first airline to introduce ticketing at petrol pumps, retail outlets, online kiosks and web outlets. India Post, the country’s 150 year old postal system with more than 150,000 post offices and over 600,000 employees, is the largest postal network in the world. There are 5000 internet enabled post offices in the country. “Our model is largely driven by availability of Internet and credit card, this tie up will ensure that our tickets are available to the Indians residing in Rural India where the penetration of both is comparatively lesser, enabling people to make cash payments at the Internet driven India Post offices,” Deccan Aviation executive chairman Captain Gopinath. The postal department will earn the 5% commission on tickets the carrier gives to its agents, according to Mint. Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, the carrier owned by the UB Group Holdings Ltd, which also owns a 26 percent stake in Air Deccan, sells 3 percent of its tickets through ATMs of banks and Reliance Webworld outlets, and is of the opinion that full fare airlines have more opportunity for business by selling tickets through non conventional channels.
