In Pakistan, it turns out, if you forward an SMS joke about President Asif Ali Zardari, you’ll have little to laugh about for 14 years. Pakistan interior minister Rahman Malik said last week that the country’s Federal Investigation Agency will trace down SMSes and emails that slander the political leadership, under the Cyber Crimes Act, reports IANS. Offenders face upto 14 years in prison apart from confiscation of their property.

This is no laughing matter even if you are a foreign national. The country will seek Interpol assistance in deporting foreign offenders, according to the IANS story.

Here are some reactions (1, 2, 3) from Pakistan’s media.
