Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has launched the Google Translate service for Hindi, which allows users to translate text from English to Hindi and Hindi to English. Here’s what Waiting For Godot is like in Hindi. I quite liked the fact that the site also renders the English sentence for the translated text on mouseover. We also discovered a bug, since ContentSutra isn’t rendering properly in Hindi (see this. According to Google, only around 13 percent of the Indian population is English literate; this is the first in a series of updates from the company in the Indic languages space.

The company had launched a transliteration service last year, but translation is far more complex, since not just the words themselves, but the context and meaning of the sentence that has to be a part of the translated text; the same word can have different meanings in different contexts.
