Bharatstudent.com Highest Ranked Indian Social Networking Site?

Launched just four months ago, Bharatstudent.com, the social networking Web site aimed at college students in India and those of Indian origin abroad has become the highest ranked Indian social networking site, according to Web information company Alexa. [via Mint]  [Ed’s Note: Alexa is famously inaccurate, so take this for what it is.]

BharatStudent.com says it has 1.4 million registered users, with focus on advice for Indian students seeking entry to universities abroad. The company hires students as campus representatives for a monthly fee that varies from Rs 4,000 for India-based students to $500 (Rs 20,500) for Indian students on overseas campuses.

  • Here is my original writeup of how Bharatstudent.com is SPAMMING in orkut communities

I am aghast at reading all of these statements about the site. There must be some truth to this if so many are complaining about the same things.

  • md:moshiur rahman

    its very very good.

  • Kris

    Hi All,

Bharatstudent.com and many companies like that are all owned by a single company i.e. http://www.northgatetech.com/. Northgate owns Axill Europe Ltd and Axill inturn owns Bharatstudent etc. These are the guys behind the lousy "GLOBE 7" messenger. So guys if you see at the bottom of the webpage "© All rights reserved to Axill Europe Ltd." then you know who owns it.

By the way Northgate raised around $100MILLION USD in their IPO from memory and their current Stock Price :  Rs1206.95 .

The unfortunate killing of Adnan Patrawala has just brought to fore the scandalous and harmful side of Orkut. I would say that one of out every four Orkut profile is fake and is being used to contact and manipulate genuine susceptible users. Either they are being sexually lured by Sites like Bharatstudent or they are being threatened by scammers who,  if the victim doesnt comply, uploads personal information like cell number , vulgar photos and thus cause a lot of mental trauma.

Mumbai police should not only find Adnan's killers but also shut down sites like Bharatstudent.com which are just promoting sex-addiction among Orkut users. It has been breaking laws since its inception by hosting(or claiming to) Porn videos on its servers.
The founders and people who run this site should be put behind bars.

    Get going Mumbai police

The bull run of all the asset classes like Equities, Real Estates, Bonds, Commodities, Art, Metals, Precious Metals, Antiques is the PRIME reason why people are falling head over heals to venture out to dotcoms.

Socializing sites is just the most "In-Thing"  and so its being used by every Tom ,Dick and his Laptop to try their luck.  Remb during the 2000 IT Boom simple content sites like Yahoo and Rediff etc were the ' In Thing ' . Also the best part about these socialising sites is that the promoters dont have to worry about content. Its taken care by the users. Users visit, join and create their own content and make the site run on Auto-mode. Do you think Google ever provides Orkut with content ???

Well just like every director who makes a stupid film forsees as his film as a hit and all,  every dotcom guy think his site would be another facebook or Myspace. However we all know how many out of the 800 movies that come out every year in India succeed and how many of these stupid dotcoms would earn even their startup cost before bleeding to an untimely and lonely death.

Bharatstudent?? It amazes me how these guys have managed to fund this site even this long. Whoever is funding bharatstudent to employ people to Spam Orkut is very motivated. That chap must surely believe in victory as Hitler did when Russians had invaded Berlin. During his final days Hitler went mad and was giving orders to the Army divisions which were long killed by the Allied forces. He finally shot his wife and himself and asked to be incinerated so that Russians dont get to his body.

As I speak Orkut's Sex based communities are reeking under the spam effect. Lack of content and omnious spam are repulsing users away. Who'd in their right mind want to go to a baharatstudent site when he's lookin for some hot and wet action. All I want to say about Bharatstudent is - KLPD.

  • Sparsh Mehra

I dont know how could sequoia fund a bad site like minglebox - and I wonder who on earth is willing to buy this dirty bharatstudent?

There are almost a dozen Indian sites to date - some of them are fropper, rediff connexions (I wonder who visits this strange name), minglebox, yaari (the only thing impressive is the drag-drop stuff), metrojoint, bharatstudent, bigadda (big anil's big game), indyarocks (somewhat okay), desimartini (please!)....I wonder who will succeed and who will shut doors within 1 year.

Industry avg. says 80% of new internet ventures get closed within 1st year. Only minglebox, fropper, yaari, metrojoint among these sites are older than 1 year.

And this bharatstudent is not going to go anywhere.

  • BharatStudentSuxx

    Too much noise; no substance
    100% porno site

Bharatstudent is ruining the name of indian students, running a pornosite in that name.

These guys spammed communities on orkut with 'MMS Clip of Sania Mirza in Dressing Room' message which redirected to bharatstudent.com
    Filthy people… Dirty Site

Why are these socio-networking sites getting funding?

Imagine you are a Fund manager with a Private Equity firm. You are supposed to invest the idle cash so that the impatient investor (who almost died of jealousy coz his neighbour bought his fifth Ferrari and paid for a trip to the space station) can see his money tripling by chasing new ideas and bagging another Google in the making. He calls your boss to make sure you are screwing your mom (if push comes to shove) to ' manage’ his money. The last thing he wants you to do is look at valuations and genuinity of the idea. (You can’t blame the poor PE investor. His neighbour just bought the brand new Space-Suit).

Mean while you find your salary has been linked to the size of the 'deals' you do. So if you buy 50 million dollars of a bluechip or trash stock you get paid the same (percentage of the amount invested). Also you get to keep 30% of the profits and deduct 5% of the total cash managed as expenses despite of losses or profits. What you don’t want to see is another manager friend of yours who just invested in a stupid Dotcom which sells baby napkins in china. He just came back from Caribbean tanned and looking rich. ‘Run with the next thing you come across’, they tell you. and you do.

You come across a networking site which needs funding. Instead of questioning with ' what makes this one stand out', you want to be ahead of everybody in buying a stake in this site. After all you are human too; you want the commissions and percentages like other poor fund managers. And your investor seems happy too. He brags about his new portfolio of investments to his poker club members and tells them to act quickly if they want their money tripled.

Some get lucky and do strike gold but most of the money chasing new ideas gets tired of chasing when they find a hole in their shoes. A slightest scare in the economy scares the consumers/ businesses deeply and they just stop funding their fancy needs. This brings an untimely death to the scores of newly founded companies who were betting on luck more than anything. Along with these companies, money invested by PE firms and MFs goes for a toss.

There is nothing called Junk-investment in a bull market. Instead there is a thing called junk-money which is chasing everything in sight and throws all caution to the deep-refrigeration. That money wants to be the first investor in the fiftieth copy of a dotcom which was a success five years ago. Who gives a shit about the forty nine copies which sank along with the money invested. "This ones is different "  is the usual answer you hear.

  • saurabh

so since thers ppl here still in college, lemme ask u this - how many social networks wld u be logged on to ? two..three.. ? Y wld a new network b funded everyday ?- hoping to get bought by a biggie thats gonna buy 5 of them and place it under one banner. thats my take.

For your kind information, bharatstudent has employed many side-kicks who in their absolute wisdom shower their Porny presence in various forums such as these. They try to be the only ones who like BS and want us to stop mentioning PORN and BS in the same sentence.

Hey prasath.. next time please dont hide behind your mis-spellings and choose a fancier name like Frank Sinatra. That would help you blend in the forum crowd.

    Asta

  • Lol., Neone, i accept with most of your observations, But The govt. to invterfere in stopping spammers is too funny

  • Neone

The basic thinking behind spamming Orkut is to get publicity, good or bad. Any is better is none. The brains behind Bharatstudent is either too smart or an Asshole. If he thinks he will keep spamming orkut and get bharatstudent the valuations of Orkut and facebook in the international market, I pity him. Or there could be an alternate explanation, something lke- they will sell the shares of BS to a hidden subsidiary and make a lot of hullaballoo abt the valutaions. Next step would be to launch an IPO and dupe the public which by the way is Doped out of its head following the equity bull run.

Isnt government supposed to be doin its share on stopping scamsters like Bharatstudent. How can a someone telecast its ads on national television at prime time and then invite users to see a rape scene or incest video. Doesnt seem very logical. Someone must have been bought. Anyways What we can do is express our opinions as many times and as many places as we can. Democracy has given us the power to challenge the powers that be, and we will do Just That.

  • A Raheja

Hi Prasath, Do you work for www.realitymedialabs.com???

By the way, I am a die hard hater of everything indian…and well.. that partly explains my love for orkut.
Hell with patriotism. Indian sites can never make it.

  • A Raheja

This is not a portal but a big spam racket who spam in the name of dirtly messages all over the Internet…

They can never compete with Orkut… not even in dreams !!!

  • http://www.realitymedias.com/izabi/ is also a nice scirpt for these silly me too sites.,

  • Raghu

Well… jhoom seems to be running on Drupal, which is quite critically acclaimed within the community….

    proves me wrong ;)

  • Raghu

Swamy, you seem to have a point. However, if there are much more mature and free (and open source) portal frameworks available like mambo, joomla, dotnetnuke etc., which can be highly customized, why then they look unpopular with indian social networking start-ups. i may be wrong on the unpopularity part bcoz i haven't conducted any survey.

  • swamy

bharatstudent, yaars, gazzag, jhoom all these sites seem to be running on the same $399 script, they look and feel the same with no extra features. The problem is that these scripts are good enough for a small community and not a biggie like orkut or facebook. Minglebox used to look the same but now i guess they have their own set of developers (thanks to sequia?). And what the hell happened to desimartini, they've stopped their advertisements, not even updated their logo.
P.S. I'm not kidding abt the $399 script, its by a company called vastal
    http://www.vastal.com/buddy_new_version_1.0.1/
Do let me know what you guys think.

  • Today, I stumbled across yet another Indian social network website. They seem to be popping up every day :)

The site is called yaars.com. The name is catchy and easy to remember unlike some of the other Indian social networks which have names which are non-Indian sounding or too long. Yaars has the usual social networking features we see on almost every site so I'm not sure if they are bringing anything new to the table but it is worth checking out for a first look.

  • Many people talking about bharatstudent.com, so, everyone who are looking it in negative aspect should analyze once. A very important thing i say our indians are always favour towards anything which is foreign. we all want to be called as we are like foreigners. plz guys think properly even indians can start these portals and have a standing image in corporate world. don't simply bluff yourselves.

  • Ashmita

    Hi Lisa,

    This is Ashmita.

I thought of sharing the information available with me. But it seems that you are working for one of the companies above and also seems that you wanted to increase your users by means of negative publicity.
Please donot miss guide users with Half Knowledge.
I guess you have not gone through Ibibo properly! its pretty useful and is used regularly by thousands of Indian Bloggers. I Bibo awards money for the best bloggers every month. and its really interesting to see the blogs there. and abt Bharatstudent.com they have an interesting feature called Campus TV where in people are get paid if their uploaded videos gets some views.
So its like we need to point out the issue of spamming, but also appreciate the innovative features of couple of sites.

  • I am really tired of the numbers. I don't think anybody can validate the number of users anymore. The IAMAI itself is not sure how many Internet users are there in India-40? 38? or 22M unique?
I think we are already skipping one over to Web 2.0 without considering that neither the audience nor is the infrastructure is mature enough to support such apps.

Nevertheless its a good sign that lot of sites/companies are being launched.. Couple of years from now, we will know who has the last laugh..

  • I think these sanjay, ashmita, sanjana, deisha etc. are fake geeks - cornering bharatstudent.

I am just tired looking at these useless junkies like bharatstudent, ibibo, yaari spam all over the net. If their product is not good, they can not sustain on a longer run. You can keep your team spamming the net forever now. If your visitors don't stay, your product is worthless and that's what I see in these sites.

  • How much geniue is BS.Paying ppl to get members will not wrk too far.lets see how much they can retain.

  • sanjay

"""But i wonder why Yahoo and MSN are looking to buy Bharatstudent.com???

Where did u get this info from???
Well, if this is true, I better buy some shares in its parent company, Northgate Technologies.

Could u please confirm for me?
    Thanks

  • Ashmita

Hi Guys, i totally agree the factor that Bharatstudent.com links are seen everywhere. But i wonder why Yahoo and MSN are looking to buy Bharatstudent.com???
IS this a rumour or fact?  like we know Orkut was acquired by google and few other networking sites have been sold to big heads previously, I guess we might here a news soon abt Bharatstudent too…

  • Sanjana

I am one of the member of this Social Networking website who is a final year engineering student. I and my friends enjoy the stuff there. It is one of the happening site among the college going crowds like us. The student support through Study Abroad is really helpful ........ just log in and check out yourselves.

  • Deisha

Hey Guys, i accept that the spammed orkut but who doesnt????? Social networking sites are the best source to market any ones products. I started using Bharatstudent.com because Orkut waz banned in my campus and i liked the site and today i have few of my old friends if not many on bharatstudent.com. They are definitely growning and a meedre 100 people logging on to the site daily cant make it this big….....i accept that they are getting bigger day by day….....

  • highstake

    guys
the numbers are fake.they dont have 1.4 mill registred users.they have 1.2 laks(cant disclouse the source).they have a team of 100 who log in to site every day to feed videos and movie realted content.any site with such huge team is bound to have such a rank

  • BharatStudent.com probably is also the reason why India is number 2 on orkut for the number of registrations..They apparently create one new orkut account everyday, and spam several orkut communities. Recently mginger was in the news for having amassed 4 lakh subscriptions..These websites are setting a bad precedent of using Spam to amass users.

Also, I agree with Mr. Swamy on the active list of users. There are so many Indian nationals in the American universities today that it is not a great deal to make a living there. So, it is only the initial couple of months that the student might be active on BS..I dont think it has anything else to even offer..

  • swamy

good to hear they have so many users but how many of those 1 million users are active, who login atleast twice or thrice… paying someone to get a formidable user base is not a big thing, what are they doing to retain the users? my first impression was that there was no forum where people could interact and get opinions (or may be there is one buried deep inside the pages).. and the study abroad page just links to various university sites which is of not much help.
But since the site is just 4 months old i think they'll ramp up pretty soon.

  • Bad marketing technique by them, spamming all the yahoo groups and adult yahoo groups .
They spam several of my own yahoo groups :(.
