BBC Content, Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi At Rajshri.com; On TV Content Online

I had written (grumbled) in the past, about the BBC not giving access to historical video content related to India and Pakistan, to viewers from India, so it comes as a pleasant surprise to find that Rajshri Media tied-up with the BBC for streaming some of that historical content. The newly launched section called BBC Motion Gallery has historical clips of Indira Gandhi, The Indo- Bangladesh Peace Treaty, British PM Attlee, the Indian Cricket Team’s Homecoming after winning the 1983 World Cup, among others…The Windows Media Streaming is a real pain, though, and I wish they’d used flash. No clips is longer 3 minutes, so they can probably be used for mobile as well.

But more importantly, I noticed that Rajshri has launched episodes of the iconic “Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, a Balaji Telefilms serial from STAR TV. These episodes are free to air, so there’s advertising revenue share on offer, but not available for download at Rajshri. The same is available for download on STAR’s own site - Indyaondemand, here.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, there’s no exclusivity of content online. Content distributors (in this case STAR), will offer it via several portals and platforms for monetization, and anything over the TV revenues (where exclusivity is necessary), is extra. It’s only when online and mobile revenues are significant, will they strive for ownership of platforms and portals, that exclusivity will make a comeback as a differentiator online. That’s when another issue will raise it’s head; like in case of the Writers Guild of America strike in the USA, content creators and producers (and not aggregators like STAR and ZEE), will demand a greater share of the pie on account of new media revenues. But for that to happen, video content consumption and revenues from India have to become significant.

It is interesting to knw that Indian’s are understanding new media
Rajshri’s site a very good concept but i have not been able to understand that would they be able to even recover their bandwidth cost ... with 1500 to 1700 hits per episode and the star content which they have is 2 years old .... i am not sure how much money is star making but yet ....people are watching them .... in huge numbers .....

Dish tv initially and now the next wave is IPTV .... when i can watch the content free or even download it free y would be ready to pay .....

i dont understand this really .....

even on the music front Tseries is not available in India which is a very big market as per info as for saleem and gang it is US

helloo we are 120 crs indian waha sirf 1 cr hoga socho samjho

but they would never be able to as they are content owners

Content pretty much like brands are exclusive. The question you’re asking is where can i buy it/consume it.

When coke makes coke, it makes it available everywhere and in many size. The fact that it is coke and has to be branded as such remains. Now the consumer can buy it anywhere, but the retailer can only buy it from Coke.

On the internet, as of now anyone can serve coke (content) but still not necessarily buy it from Coke (Piracy). Then they can mix it into a cocktail and not even give credit to coke.

Now the internet thought is lets give coke cans away for free and let coke make money from printing adverts on their cans…. Hmmm!!!!

Hi
I was not impressed with the BBC content on Rajshri. Its slow and its not even the tip of the iceberg.
I wish I could access it somehow from any of the BBC websites..
