    THE STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE

As you would be aware, the entire world; especially India with its rapidly growing population; is facing acute shortage of food grains. The agriculture sector in India has lost its attractiveness (profitability) in these times of Globalisation and so any effort in the field of agriculture related entrepreneurship is GUARANTEED to get immense Tax benefits and other support and encouragement from the Govt of India.

The land in Punjab, the ‘granary’ of India, is losing (has lost) its fertility due to excessive use of chemical fertilisers. In this scenario, it is being hoped by specialists and experts that the fertile land in the plains of North Bihar would contribute to the Food Security of India. These plans aim to profit from encouraging agricultural related entrepreneurship in the FERTILE plains of North Bihar in the non-rainy seasons; and enhance the Food Security situation of India in its own small way, by coordinating the Marketing of processed food products over Internet.

    BROAD OUTLINE OF THE PLANS

    1.  Motivate (spiritually inspire) the residents of the villages in North Bihar to take to agriculture related entrepreneurship.
    2.  Guide the villagers in the Govt procedures for getting the Licensing and Registration of their own Food Processing Units (FPUs).
    3.  The residents of the villages in North Bihar would be encouraged to produce items like ‘Sattu’, ‘Daliya’, Cornflakes, Chips and Sauces of all types and soft drinks including fruit juices besides other products (like of Makhana and such other items).
    4.  The Project would initially be in the form of a Private enterprise in North Bihar, and would provide Packaging and Marketing facilities to the products of the duly Regd member FPUs for decided profit percentages.
    5.  That is; the enterprise would (attractively) Package the products of the FPUs and would sell their products for decided profit percentages.
    6.  The profits made by the enterprise will be utilised to return the Venture Capital amount,  to finance the expansion of the enterprise; reduce the profit percentages for processed Food Grains and other aspects as decided by the ‘Core Team’ of the project/ enterprise.
    7.  The Marketing would be coordinated over Internet; and well researched Legal systems regarding ALL aspects would be evolved till the time the project begins.
    8.  In order to realise these aims, Venture Capital funding (initially of $ 1 Million to $ 10 Million – Rs 4 Crore to Rs 40 Crore) would be managed in a planned manner.
    9.  In order to procure this Venture Capital funding, a Private (profit-making) FPU is planned to be operated in Madhubani city in Bihar state after the proposer retires from his Military service with Pension (earliest possible by 30 June 2014).

    PREPARATIONS COMPLETED TILL NOW

    1.  The ‘Chordia Food Park’ (CFP) located in Shirwal near Pune city carries out activity on similar lines. Its web address is www.chordia.com.
    2.  The management of the CFP has been contacted by the proposer in connection with these plans envisaging raising organisations similar to theirs in North Bihar.
    3.  In this connection, the management of the CFP has been requested by the proposer to employ a (Presently Serving) Brigadier, (55 yrs) of the Indian Army after he retires from service in Feb 2009 with Pension.
    4.  The Brigadier would gain experience with the CFP on the issues and complications concerning the FPUs, and carrying out the Marketing of Processed Food products over Internet, in preparation of this Project. He would also research the Legally (and practically) proper method by which the enterprise could take the shape of a co-operative (like ‘Amul’ of Verghese Kurien) from its Private beginnings.
    5.  The Brigadier would be the Chairman/ President of the Project and the proposer would be the CEO.
    6.  The proposer would manage his own FPU in Madhubani city in North Bihar (Carrying out the marketing of its products over Internet from a city in some other state in India) after he retires from service with Pension – earliest possible by 30 June 2014.
    7.  Leaders at the ground level in Madhubani city have been contacted by the proposer, and they have promised to give him the maximum support possible by them for operating a profit - making FPU in Madhubani city after he retires with Pension (earliest possible by 30 June 2014); their health and circumstances at that time permitting.
    8.  The proposer is in contact with the AOL - ‘Art of Living’ (of HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar) HQ in Bangalore, India and with the HQ of the SSRDP (Sri Sri Rural Development Programme) in Patna in Bihar.
    9.  Nav Chetna Shivirs of the AOL have proven and well documented success stories all across the world and will definitely inspire the residents of North Bihar in the right direction.
    10.  The proposer will get ‘Nav Chetna Shivirs’ of the AOL conducted in identified areas in North Bihar (in a well planned manner) by the HQ of the AOL in Bihar.
    11.  The proposer has gained considerable insight into the functioning of Venture Capital firms and is in contact with the network of Angel Investors in India, concerning this Project.
    12.  Though many undesirable events (accidents, ill health, family problems) are possible with those involved in this project, NATURE WILL ALSO COOPERATE SINCE THE INTENTION IS NOBLE.
    THE CREDIT

The credit for the enterprise would go to HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the ‘Art of Living’. The CFP, with its active involvement (of recruiting the Chairman/President of this Project and supporting the initial operations of the project) would be the party physically present.

    1.  Background: The proposer’s father, after his MA, PhD in Sanskrit in 1969, moved to work in the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Research Institute in Lonavla in Pune district of Maharashtra state in India from his village in Madhubani district. The proposer was born in Lonavla in Jul 1971 and studied in Don Bosco, Lonavla and in Fergusson College, Pune before going for his Military training in Jul 1988. The proposer’s father expired on 12 August 2008.
    2.  Family Details: The proposer has a healthy Mother (61 yrs) and a healthy younger sister (33 yrs; with two healthy children, male, female both below 8 yrs) dependent on him. Besides, he is married, with a healthy wife (36 yrs, from Madhubani district) and two healthy children (Male, Female; both below 10 yrs) to support. The proposer also has an elder sister (40 yrs; healthy) who is married to an officer in the Standard Chartered Bank in Kanpur (UP). The proposer feels that with these parameters, these plans would be the best way he could make best use of his good fortune to get Human birth in India.
    3.  Family Property: The proposer has family property of around 3 to 4 Acres of agricultural land and a house in village Babu Pali in Madhubani district of North Bihar; a house in Madhubani city; and a house in Talegaon Dabhade (near Pune). Besides, they also have around 20 to 30 Mango trees in village Babu Pali and relatives from whom NO support would be forthcoming or taken.
    4.  Important Factor. The proposer has survived a SEVERE Head Injury sustained in a Road Traffic Accident in Nov 1993 in which he was in COMA for 20 days because his skull was fractured in 23 places. However, he retains all his faculties including his memory and command over the four languages he knew prior to his accident (Hindi, English, Maithili and Marathi). He has also undergone Lumbar Laminectomy L4-L5 with discectomy L5 (that is; removal of his L4-L5vertebra) on 22 Apr 2007. Presently, he is not on any medicines, and is fully fit. All indications suggest that DESTINY DESIRES TO ADDRESS THE FOOD SECURITY SITUATION OF INDIA THROUGH THESE PLANS.
    THE TEAM

At this stage, the only other member of the team for this planned project is the (presently serving) Brigadier who would be retiring in Feb 2009. The proposer served under this Brigadier in the yr 2006; and the Brigadier would be the President/Chairman of the project. He (the President/Chairman of the project) will be responsible for coordinating the Marketing of processed food products over Internet besides guiding the proposer in managing the first FPU of the enterprise. He would serve with the CFP to gain the required experience from Apr 2009 till 30 June 2014 – the earliest the proposer can retire from service (with Pension).

    THE FIRST FPU

The first FPU in Madhubani city would be operated from the proposer’s house in Madhubani city.  It will deal with production (and Marketing) of 'Mint Cola' which is a deliciously tasty preparation of Mint (‘Pudina’) leaves sweetened in water. The proposer’s wife prepares them in a very tasty manner. Preserving the drink for a longer period of time would be duly researched.

The Marketing of the products of this (first) FPU would be carried out in Cinema Halls, Shopping Malls, College Canteens, Railway Stations, and other researched places. The Brigadier would learn all aspects involved, concerning the enterprise, and would also guide the proposer in the process of establishing the first FPU of the enterprise. He would also recruit additional members of the ‘Core Team’ (all related with the AOL) which would take all Policy decisions regarding the enterprise/project.

Later, the project would concentrate exclusively on facilitating entrepreneurship in the Food grains sector in the FERTILE areas of North Bihar (after two to three years of successful – profitable operations; and procuring Venture Capital of the manageable amount at that point in Time). Better, (more profitable) approaches would be followed under the guidance of CFP and the ‘Core Team’ of the enterprise. These are the plans (thoughts) at this stage relating to enhancing the Food Security situation of India…

I (the proposer) am looking forward to your reply and possible support…

    INTRODUCTION (ABOUT THE PROPOSER)

    ·  The proposer is Major Arun Kumar Jha, a 36-yr-old serving Officer of the Indian Army originally from a village in Madhubani district in (North) Bihar. His father migrated to work in the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Research institute in Lonavla in Pune district of Maharashtra state in India after his MA, PhD in Sanskrit in 1969, and he was born and brought up there in 1971. The proposer studied in Don Bosco, Lonavla and in Fergusson College, Pune before going for his Military training.
    ·  The proposer has survived a SEVERE Head Injury in Nov 1993, due to which he has presently lost most of the hair on his head, and the scars are also glaringly visible. However, the proposer retains all his faculties, and has continued in service for these (more than) 14 years after his accident. His surviving such an injury with his existing abilities convinces the proposer that he is DESTINED for this activity.

    SECTOR

    ·  Food Processing Industry in the fertile areas of North Bihar.

    FUNDS

    ·  $ 280 Million (Rs 1120 Crore) or more.

    SEQUENCE

    ·  $ 40 Mn (Rs 160 Crore) from 01 Jan 2012 to 01 Jan 2014.
    ·  $ 240 Mn (Rs 960 Crore) or more utilised in equal amounts of $ 40 Mn from 01 Jan 2014 till 01 Jan 2016.

    COMPETITION

    ·  No competition on the scale visualised exists in the area.

    PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS

    ·  The land in the plains of North Bihar is very fertile due to the silt deposited by the rivers flowing from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal over the yrs.
    ·    Global warming (melting of the Himalayan glaciers) guarantees the high level of ground water in Bihar in the coming decades and centuries.
    ·  The potential of agriculture related entrepreneurship holds promise of great tax related incentives and profits in Bihar.
    ·  The Food processing industry is guaranteed success due to the effects of Globalisation, increase in population and an increase in the number of working women across the world.
    ·  Getting involved in the Packaging and Marketing related issues in the food processing sector in Bihar would certainly prove to be profitable when carried out in the area on a large scale.
    ·  Since no such enterprise has been implemented in Bihar state on this scale, it is not possible to get the exact figures required.

    ASSUMPTIONS

    ·  With many well documented and proven success stories across the world, and the residents of Bihar also being clearly aware of their situation; it is assumed that the efforts of the ‘Art of Living’ (HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar) will be effective in North Bihar.
    ·  It is also assumed that Political support from the Govt of Bihar will be available on real time basis.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    ·  Inspire the residents of the area of interest to set up their own Food Processing Units—FPUs—through the efforts of the ‘Art of Living’ (HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar) the world’s largest NGO.
    ·  The FPUs will prepare Pickles, Sauces, Daliya, Cornflakes, Sattu, and all sorts of processed food products including Chips, Sauces and fruit juices.
    ·  Residents of the area will be given guidance regarding the available Govt incentives and the rules relating to Registration and Licensing of their FPUs by experts in the Packaging Parks.
    ·  The plan is to set up Seven (or more) Packaging Parks all across the identified (flood free) areas in North Bihar, from where the guidance will be given and the products of the FPUs will be attractively packaged.
    ·  24/7 provision of electricity will be ensured in the Packaging Parks by DG sets, or Solar powered (most economically suitable) means.
    ·  For produce requiring Packaging immediately upon preparation, members (strictly male) of the FPU could come inside the Packaging Park premises after thorough checks along with the Raw Material required for their produce.
    ·  There will be three distinct components of the enterprise.
    1.  The Packaging parks that will all be in Bihar. They will carry out Packaging and Supply of the processed food products prepared by local FPUs.
    2.  The Marketing department of the enterprise, which will be located along with the HQ in Pune city in Maharashtra state in India. It will communicate to the Packaging Parks in Bihar, over Internet and Telephone, regarding the specific destination where the produce available with them has to be sent.
    3.  The Staff Selection Centre of the enterprise, which will be located in Pune city in Maharashtra. It will be responsible to supply the required staff in the Packaging Park and all components of the enterprise including the HQ. It will also maintain a reserve of 20 % possible staff in its premises in Pune.
    ·  The staff (Officers, Clerks, Drivers and Doctors) of all components of the enterprise (the HQ, the Packaging Parks and the Staff Selection Centre in Pune) will all be healthy males between 35 to 50 yrs from outside Bihar. They will be changed/ transferred after three to five yrs, based on the requirements. Their pay will be credited into the most convenient bank account given by them. They will all be specialists in their respective fields.
    ·  The Packaging Parks will each be raised on funds of $ 35 Million, and will consist of structures built on neighbouring plots of land; since a single large piece of land will not be possible. All structures will be minimum 200M x 200M in area, or larger as per the requirements, and will preferably be clustered together.
    ·  The structures in a Packaging Park will be two Cold storages, all types of food packaging plants; a Vehicle park (with complete repair facilities); the Office Area; a Medical Inspection Room and a Shopping Complex. Other structures revealed from experience and research will also be incorporated.
    ·  All activity will be computerised and FPUs will be responsible for their produce.
    ·  FPUs could be given loans of up to Rs 40 Lakh ($ 0.1 Mn) each to facilitate their production activity on researched Legal terms.
    ·  At $ 0.1 Mn per FPU, total 100 FPUs will be supported (for total expenses of $ 10 Mn) over two years.
    ·  All FPUs will get profits commensurate to their production, and the principal (and Interest) of the loan amount given to the FPUs will be recovered in uniform installments (over a possible period of 10 yrs).
    ·  Systems of a Brigade HQ of the Indian Army, duly modified, will be applied and enforced in the Packaging Parks.
    ·  Locals will be recruited as JCOs and NCOs after conducting BWS (Breath, Water, Sound) Workshops (Nav Chetna Shivirs) of the Art of Living.
    ·  The first such Packaging Park will be raised in Madhubani district of Bihar in the identified area by the proposer, Major Arun Kumar Jha, originally from the district, though born and brought up in Pune district in Maharashtra, from 01 Jan 2012 to 01 Jan 2014.
    ·  Six or more Packaging Parks with similar systems will be raised in other identified areas of North Bihar from 01 Jan 2014 to 01 Jan 2016. At this stage, it is assessed that the enterprise will start showing the desirable results by 01 Jan2020.

    THE FINAL OPERATIONS

Vehicles of the concerned Packaging Park will collect the processed food products from the most convenient location of individual FPUs at pre-arranged timings, and get them to the Packaging Park. Since every FPU will be responsible for its product, two representatives of an FPU will accompany the products of the concerned FPU to a Packaging Park in order to expedite the Packaging. The vehicles of the Packaging Park concerned will subsequently deliver the packaged produce to places given by the Marketing Dept in the HQ in Pune. Profit percentages for the costs of Packaging and Marketing can be worked out by the Accounts Department in the Packaging Park(s) in Bihar, and by the Accounts Department in Pune. All dealings with individual FPUs will be computerised and appropriate systems put in place. The required systems will evolve through experience.

    EXIT OPTIONS FOR THE VC

    ·  After the project gets consolidated (by approx 01 Jan 2020) it can be gone in for a strategic sale/merger with or acquisition by some Indian multinational.
    ·  Otherwise also, once the project gets established; it is assessed that it will start yielding exceptionally high returns.

    BENEFITS

    Major benefits will be: -

    ·  A decrease in migrations from Bihar.
    ·  A definite difference in the prevalent social structure in Bihar.
    ·  Rising of the general economy of Bihar.
    ·  A definite rise in the agricultural production of India.
    ·  Immense Media Mileage to the acquiring Indian multinational.

    ·  The Proposer. The proposer will be the overall coordinator between the ‘Art of Living’, the Packaging Parks in North Bihar and between the Staff Selection Centre and the HQ of the enterprise in Pune. The Policy will be formulated in such a way that all decisions, especially Financial, will be taken only after consultations with all concerned parties including the representative of the VC firm.
    ·  Two other (Civilian) Specialists. Partnership of two other appropriate (Civilian) Specialists will be sought after the enterprise is confirmed VC funding (in the preparation period).

    GAINING THE RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

    ·  The proposer has experience of 15 yrs active service in the Indian Army.
    ·  He realises that starting from the bottom will be too time consuming, and might not guarantee him success, if he takes that route.
    ·  So, he plans to make optimum use of his 15 yrs of Military experience by effectively managing the services of Specialists.
    ·  He plans to gain experience in the Food Processing Industry relevant to the area of operations, and to the execution of these plans till 01 Jan 2012.
    ·  For his preparation and for addressing his responsibility toward his immediate family, the proposer will require a sum of $ 0.2 Mn (Rs 8 Million) from the Venture Capitalist/ Angel investor by 31 Oct 2008.
    ·  In that event, he will apply for premature discharge from service by Monday, 29 Dec 2008.

So, he genuinely feels that he is DESTINED for this project.
    ·  However, he retains all his earlier faculties, and Destiny has brought him under the influence of HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar who exhorts his followers to contribute their abilities for the benefit of the society to which they belong.
    ·  Even after the SEVERE Head Injury (in Nov 1993), the proposer has continued in service for these almost 14 more years (and remembers fluently, the FOUR languages that he knew prior to his accident) and has gained considerable insight into the practical management systems practiced in the Indian Army. He knows that it will simply be a matter of Time when the DESTINED Venture Capital will become available to him.
    THE MOTIVATION
These thoughts originated in the proposer’s posting at Jabalpur (MP) in 2002; during which the proposer came in contact with the ‘Art of Living’ - the world’s largest NGO - and all credit will go to HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the Founder of the same. The motivation is purely spiritual, and the proposer strongly feels that a person with parameters such as his; should concentrate his energies in this direction to realise the purpose of his getting Human birth in India, (through the inspiration and spiritual guidance of Gurudev (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar)).

  • The bottom line of the story is to get Funding for the new venture whatever may be the Industry or sector it belongs. The business palns should be kept confidential and should be discussed in between the owner and the interested investor. Moreover the IAN has many tie-ups and partnerships but as someone wrote above they do have people abroad holdings strings of their Indian activities. Is their something that is completely operated by indian people, for indian people? And if at all such Network exists, Do an indian citizen, having a brillient idea to seek as a business opportunity, have proper approach to such network? People here should check out PITCHINDIA if they already been visited IAN and Mumbai angels…..

  • Arun Kumar Jha

I have fully prepared plans relating to the food processing industry in North Bihar. I am a 36 yr old serving officer of the Indian Army originally from a village in North Bihar, and inspired by HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, want to go back to my roots, and contribute in my own small way towards development of the region. I have completed more than 15 yrs of active service, and am fully fit and full of energy. I have survived a SEVERE Head Injury in Nov 1993 without any side effects, and this is another compelling reason for me to feel that I am 'destined' to carry out this activity. I have, however, lost most of the hair on my head, and the scars are also glaringly visible.
Will someone kindly contact me at bpfp@rediffmail.com to whom I can send my project profile?

  • Nikethan

We have discussed enough about ideas, ventures and investments. The most imp. aspect of any concept stage venture is 'confidentiality'. are investors trustworthy when we share our business plans with them? i believe NO. one of the reasons they don't sign NDAs is to be able copy and handover/invest in the buz plan to the team they believe in OR discourage to avoid competition. i have a 'real' case as an example. how do we counter this?

  • Nikethan

in response to bapi and tapdance, IAN/BoA is partcipated by bunch of investors. these investors take decisions in their individual capacity. for example, if any venture in the jobs, matrimony space comes in, infoedge owner (naukri, jeevasaathi guys) who happens to be a member of IAN will stay away. but other investors are free to pursue and invest…Angel Networks operate differently as against VCs….

  • hari

Have interacted with Mumbai Angels - very good set of guys who have made couple of good investments. (Guess the investment in Madhouse was the sad one). Heard from few that they move at a rapid pace unlike many other Angels. Hope they continue to have the focus and continue to invest.

I think having corporate VC (like Google) as part of your group is not a good news for entrepreneurs. Corporate VCs should be approached by a startup they feel that VC is not a potential threat in the short term. Am sure smart entrepreneurs would avoid going to IAN.

  • deepdig

more than anything…probably its just a matter of putting right practices into place such that any new ventures prospects interests are not hurt…but i guess all this requires more than just deep pockets!

  • OhMyGod

Most Indians (IAN in this case) would sleep with almost anybody(MNCs inthis case) to gain a better brand image w/o looking into the suitability of the occassion.
No wonder we had been ruled by foreign powers. Smart foreigns MNCs !!!

  • deepdig

I feel some of the guys such as google could be using this practice to gain ideas/market intelligence…defi a smart way to do such things…its a serious conflict of interest..one as an entrepreneur will be highly discouraged to present to a band that has competing companies on board..with probably no clear ways to share info only among the non-competing members

  • tapdance

IAN has internet companies like google, naukri, etc. This is a serious conflict of interest and i find it extremely amazing that such a thing has happened. Angel networks should as a rule refrain from admitting (competiting) companies.
I mean what the hell are people thinking!

Any clue if Indian Angel Network invests in companies which compete with some of their participant organisation members like naukri.com

Question is some one comes up with lets say a Job portal or a Real estate portal will IAN consider such proposals or reject them as they will be conflict of interests with their member organisation?

    cheers!
