—Guernsey Airtel, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti, has started its mobile services in Guernsey. In May 2007, they signed an agreement with Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) as part of a partner network strategy, to bring their Indian competitors services to Guernsey. The service is branded as Airtel Vodafone, Bharti had won licenses to operate 3G and 2G services in in 2006, with them providing the infrastructure and Vodafone powering services. Guernsey is located in the English Channel, northwest of France. Along with Jersey, it forms the collective grouping known as the Channel Islands. Airtel already provides services in Jersey.

—Neotel, the South African telecom operator in which Tata’s have a stake of 26 percent, has acquired Transtel Telecom. Transtel is the commercial division of Transnet, which owns all port and rail infrastructure in South Africa. The Rs 120 crore worth deal will give Neotel an infrastructural boost across South Africa. Neotel competes with Telkom, the dominant operator in South Africa. According to ET, the acquisition will add Rs 300 crore to the consolidated firms’ fiscal revenue.
